Tranny case cracked around 1/2" bolt (what to do)
Just swapped new motor in (same one.. old one blew up.. long story) and noticed transmission fluid leaking. Found that the leak was coming from the bolt that just has the square 1/2" hole.. loosened it and tried to tighten it (it wasn't even close to being tight) and it cracked where it threads in. Went up to local transmission shop and they said to clean it as best as I could and JB Weld it. I, also, know two people that can weld aluminum. What would you do? Would the JB Weld be good enough for a few months while I find a new case? HELP!!!
thats just the filler hole for the tranny fluid i would just do what they said and JB weld it as that part of the tranny doesnt take any abuse or stress at all it just sits there........ it will be fine for the life of the tranny if you do it right
cracked because i believe either i or someone else over tightened it.. so yeah. jb weld is on there now.. we'll see how she does. gonna fill her up around 1030 and let it set the rest of the night (first day of school tomorrow.. have to have my car).

update as well: just filled 'er up with fluid.. no leaks. have a light on it now to try to get it to cure a bit quicker.

THERES A BIG ******* CRACK, thats sign of stess.
Have it welded.</TD></TR></TABLE>
cus big ****** cracks are only caused by stress........ that plug takes absolutely no abuse it just sits there they dont break unless you over-tighten them or drop the tranny on it
some people on here are just blunt dicks

Vibration can and most likely will make the crack grow, have it welded. JBweld is a ghetto repair method I wouldnt even bother thinking about it.
Costs about the same to have it properly welded, so whats the point in using JB.

Yes I agree, because they're advising on using JB weld to fix cars.

That crack is a sign of stress this area vibrates just like ever other part of the case, and a scratch obviously got out of hand.
Is it just me or do I see 2 more forming !

it's you. anyhow.. i've been advised by just about everyone to go ahead and look for a new tranny case; hence the reason i'm not worried about the jb weld lasting a life time. i did prep it well, though.. parts cleaner + wire brushed the hell out of it. sticking pretty damn good. just gotta keep an eye on it until i get a new tranny case. there's really not that much stress on it; except vibration like you stated... vibration is going to be lessened here soon with a set of polyurethane mounts.
either way: i'm on the look out for a new s-80 trans case.
thanks for the input though guys
