Default Code #4 and #9...

(I searched before I wrote this....)

'89 Civic Si. When I bought the car is was stock w/ 165k mile D16a6 SOHC.

I purchased the car and drive it home for 600 miles without any problems, drove it for another 500 mile around town, no problems. So to this point I have about 1100 miles on the car. Now it is a race only car, miles from this point on are to events and back home.

I was building the car for SoloII STS. One week I put on intake and remove rear portion of exhaust. Ran an event without incident. No CEL.

Next week I decide to put on aftermarket header and turndown exhaust. I get the aftermarket header installed, however, I couldn't get the O2 sensor out of the stock header before I needed to take the car to the shop for fabrication of exhaust. So I drive the car to shop without O2 sensor installed (about 2 miles). No CEL.

I pick the car up from shop with exhaust complete (18" pipe off back of cat w/ turndown), still no 2 sensor installed. During the 2 miles drive home I get a CEL. Understandably, there is no O2 sensor. Get the car home, install the O2 sensor (extend wire to new location on header). Start the car, no more CEL. Problem solved right.....

Next day leave for 4 hour trip to next event. Get about 10 minutes into drive and CEL comes on. I need to get to the event, so I keep going. The car pulls fine, idles fine, normal gas mileage. I stop to get gas, turn off car, restart car --> no more CEL. 10 minutes later, CEL comes back.

Codes I get are #4 (Crank Sensor) and #9 (Cylinder Sensor). I got these codes from my '88 Service Manual, can someone confirm they are the same on the '89 Si?

I don't have anything to fix this, and the car is running fine so I run the event. Car runs great.

The condition continues the entire ride home ---> turn off car, CEL goes away and comes back after normal driving for 10 minutes. If I let the car just idle it doesn't throw the code.

I followed the first set of troubleshooting instructions and removed the 10amp fuse from under the hood, the CEL still comes on after about 10 minutes of driving.

Both of these codes seem to have to do with the distributor, so maybe it just needs to be replaced. However, in the back of my head I think about how all of this started when I didn't have the O2 sensor installed ---> I supposed these could be seperate issues.

Any advise/suggestions?

I would double check all of the wiring for sure maybe when you were extendin your o2 wire and what not you may have bumped something and it could have come loose. I am guessing you probably are just having bad luck and I your dizzy just startedd to crap out on ya all at once.....I would replace that with one from distributer king.....they even give us honda-techers a discount......I need to get a new one two I have been living with a code 9 for about 10,000 miles but car seems to run great so I haven't replaced it yet. hope this helps.....
