Default Need some cam advice please

I threw this up in the All Motor forum, but since it's Type-R related, I figure I'd poke some of the brains that reside here:

Hey All,

I did a search (archived) but I really couldn't find specific answers to any of my questions, so I thought I would post one up here. (Dons flame suit)

I'm in the process of looking for some cams for my DD ITR, but I have no idea what to get. The car is almost stock with the exception of i/h/e and some ghetto Eibach springs the previous owner had installed.

I have been eyeing the BC Spec IVs, but I'm worried that those cams might be too aggressive for my stock 10.6:1 compression.

What should I do?

As for whp goals, I really don't have any at this point, I'm just looking to make some decent gains and hit the track for some auto-x on occasion.

In addition to the cams (in case anyone was wondering) I was also going to put in upgraded springs, retainers, cam gears, a TODA timing belt, and a mugen headgasket and have it Hondata s300 dyno tuned post installation.

Any positive help you guys/gals could offer would be awesome.

Thanks!

Toda Spec A's would be a nice complement to your current setup. My brother's car is generating close to 200 whp with very similar modifications to the ones you listed. The A's can also get along with the stock valve springs, retainers, and timing belt, so you could put that money towards tuning costs.

Nobody else is running aftermarket cams in their ITR?

i was in the same situation as you but was intimidated by opening up the head.

I still want to do cams, but am worried about the whole tuning process, so i still continue to research to see what else i can dig up. My R is the same as yours, basic bolt ons mostly a DD in spring-summer and occasional auto x about once a month

GL though, and i as well will benefit off this thread

I like the Skunk2 Stage 2's. Here is a dyno of my ITR from a while back. Stock block and head, just the Skunk cams, springs, and retainers. JDM 4-1 header, AEM CAI. Hondata.

135ftq

'Cause that's what moves the car.

Since the car is a daily driver and you really have no supporting modifications for large cams (ie: compression, headwork...) I would recommend something you can easily drop in without the need for a new valvetrain. Toda A, Skunk2 stg1, Jun2, and a few others can all be ran w/o stiffer valvesprings.

And your assumption is correct, with stock USDM ITR compression, BC IV's would definately be too big, the BC 3's or 3+'s could work, but then you would be looking at upgrading the entire valvetrain as well.

I was planning on getting a mugen gasket to get the CR up to like 11.1:1 with the BC III+ cams. So far from everything I've read and the comments, these seem to be the way to go for moderate gains and decent reliablity.

Stock cams for me.
I suggest you do the same, No worries about reliability

But if your going to do the 2 layer head gasket then that plus spec As should be very nice. Or if you don't mind spending a bit extra then Spec Bs with 2 layer and your other stuff should result in very nice power. But remember Your going to need a good tuner to make it safe to beat on.

Great bang for buck, not as nice as Todas or Juns.

But skunk2 s2 cam shafts +valve train upgrade + tuning + cam gears = nice upgrade for price

Default Got my ****

Thanks to everyone for their input, it was greatly appreciated. I'm stoked and I can't wait to get the rest of my **** together so I can get this in and dyno tuned.

I met with Jimmy (Espec_rep) yesterday just outside of Irwindale Speedway on my way to the drift finals at Formula D and picked up my shizzle.

Here are the goods:
