your thoughts on salvage title R's and how much they are worth.......
I am looking to buy an ITR (or ideally trade my WRX for one), and i found one locally but it is salvage title due to theft. The only things that were stolen on the car were the seats, taillights, spoiler, gauge cluster, and rims (cops showed up fast).
Anyway, its an 01 PY with 62k on it (odometer says 53k because it was replaced).
The stolen items have been replaced...........ITR back seats but Prelude front, and some no-name black rims. and everything else is OEM.
Guy wants 12k and will give me his car + 5k for my WRX.
What are your thoughts please?

So he wants 12k but is willing to give you the R plus 5k for the WRX? Well do you owe on the WRX? That would be the first question. If you don't then it seems like a pretty good deal to me. What is the WRX worth now? Just figure out what the WRX is worth and if it's worth less than 17k you've got yourself a deal. Now that's provided the VIN's on the motor and tranny match the chassis.
All VINS match up....or so i was told (obviously i wil have to go and check into it myself.). Engine and Tranny and Suspension was not touched and is still stock.
The WRX is worth around 17k. But i told him that I estimate i would do it for 5k or slightly higher difference, and he seemed pretty cool with it.

Reading is fundamental
If the VIN's do really match and it was deemed salvage due to the seats/interior I think it would be a good trade. See if you can bump him up more on the extra cash though.

Something sounds fishy. I don't understand why an insurance company would total the car (and issue a salvage title) if those were the only things that were stolen. That's not enough to total it.

Sounds high. You're talking about a crappy car (sorry, but the way he fixed it, it sounds really crappy) that would be difficult to re-sell or insure due to the salvage title. An 01 ITR with 62K miles on it, clean and in decent condition, would probably be worth around $16K or so. $4K is not enough of a discount to make a crappy car with a salvage title worthwhile.
That car shouldn't sell for more than $8K, maybe $9K tops.

yeah, just thinking about it, the little bit of money i would have in my pocket from this deal wouldn't make up for the loss on resale value of a clean R.
It's just discouraging. I really want an R. I know they are out there for the price i can afford to pay (or trade). I will just have to wait, my time will come i guess.

if you go through with the deal, you have go to be an idiot.
Your car is worth roughly 18k-20k
I don't see a salvage r being worth 12k, ****, you can get one with 80-100k for 12k.
Sell the wrx and start your hunt for one.
its a type r, not an enzo

i said go for it if you are gonna keep the car forever...
I bought my R salvage title due to accident, been driving it for more than 30k miles.. not a single problem. drives like new car. saved myself 6k cash. can't beat that... and who would know if u have a salvage car if u don't tell.
(plus if u can do the work urself, u've got nothing to worry about)
but if u know u gonna sell the R, not a good deal cause a lot of peeps are scared of salvage titles.

Cops showed up fast, huh? Not fast enough to find these items sitting in the chop shop with the car evidently.
And I'll bet it was only driven to church on weekends by a little old lady.
Come on, dude, this story (or some variant of it) goes with almost every salvage titled car I have seen.

Salvage title cars are not bad cars did you guys know that if a car is stolen and parked in a garage for over 30 days the insurance company will payoff the car and then it becomes property of the insurance company when recovered and then goes to an insurance auction and sold so lets say the car was recovered with a broken ignition only but after 30 days lets say 40 days well there is nothing wrong with the car but a busted ignition but since the insurance company paid the previous owner off it then becomes Salvage/Rebuilt title because there was a claim against the car and a payout!
So you buy the car at the auction for lets say $5000 and replace the broken ignition you have a great car for very little cost who wouldnt buy it just because it now has a rebuilt title? Rebuilt is ok aslong as it was not a major collision i think but theft recoveries are not bad its all in personal preference i had a buddy that had a 2000 PY Itr he sold Rebuilt title for $16500 and the new owner was cool with the title issue he was fine since it was not wrecked just stripped of some parts.
Thats my 2 cents worth, Good Luck...

Wow, James Joyce, love the stream-of-conciousness writing style! Were you actually trying to communicate?

That may be... but how realistic is it to assume that someone who steals a car (remember, this is stolen property, that someone doesn't want to get caught with) lets it sit in a garage for over a month, without tearing it apart to remove any of the valuable, easily marketable parts? And then moves the car, intact, to somewhere where it can be recovered? Not very, IMHO.
Salvage title cars are risky. They may be perfectly fine. They may have been crashed. They may have had substandard parts installed. They may have been repaired poorly and/or unsafely. And they may be difficult (even impossible) to insure, which of course is a major problem for an ITR, unless you can afford to pay for a replacement if it's stolen, without even caring. So there are distinct downsides. If it works for you, great! But I would say it's essential for anyone buying a salvage title car to (a) know what you're doing - if you don't have the experience and technical knowledge, get an opinion from someone who does - and (b) make sure you're paying much, much less than what you would need to pay for an otherwise similar car with a clean title.

That's what people usually reply when they know the other person was absolutely right, and they can't think up a better reply. But congratulations on your new, more pithy writing style - looks like you can take a hint!
