Default any lightweight clutch/pressure plates for SCCA ITB CRX's?

any decent lightweight pressure plates and disc packages that would stand up for road racing in SCCA ITB for the 85-87 CRX Si?

i see that BSI has miata and VW sets that weigh ~4-5 pounds less than stock.

is it just a matter of taking some weight off the pressure plate assembly with a local machine shop?

i want decent longevity/pricing for an IT motor that is not doing much over 100 hp. when searching for "clutch", there seemed to be more discussion of 200-300 hp applications but i didn't see any specific roadracing/SCCA discussions/applications.

the stock one works fine but maybe slightly overbuilt. i'd like to get some weight off the system within the confines of the rules (stock flywheel but any disc/plate that bolts to it).

tia,

tom

Tom, Sam Moore (Sam Moore Racing Engines in Mooresville, NC - a perrenial favorite in ITB around these parts) was making an aluminum racing clutch kit a few years ago. I do not know if he is still making them but it was a huge weight loss over an aftermarket/stock unit (this was for a 240Z and he was saying he could make one for my car as well at the time). If memory serves me correctly, they were not be a cheap item but Sam builds good stuff in the engine bay and I would think it would be worth the cost. Whether the cost is worth it to you I don't know
however.

Shoot me an IM this evening and I can get you his contact information in you want.

I'd like to know, too. I wasn't able to find anything other than a lighter disc, with a pretty much standard pressure plate.

I think I've decided on either an ACT 4 puck solid hub, or an exedy cerametallic (thin) . Even if it's not a huge loss of rotating mass, the lighter disc will help with shifting......

Of course, while searching, I found a well known IT supplier type guy advertising lightweight clutch/flywheel combos claimed to be 6.5 pounds lighter than stock...... mostly from the flywheel. And, mostly illegal. Niiiiiiiice (sarcasm, FYI).

I have been researching the same thing for my car (1995 Integra GSR) and the only thing that I could find is from:

http://www.specclutch.com

They offer a lighweight option for any pressure plate that saves 3-4 lbs for an extra $79.

For the B-series they have a alumiun pressure plate that saves 5-6 lbs.

was about to post the same thing- we haven't tried the lightweight option- thought about it but haven't bucked out, maybe next time...but we have been using their "stage 3" for years...and yes it is rated for a whole lot more hp than we've ever had in our ITA/H4 car. It is durable and our favorite (we preferred spec over the ACT, we have not run exedy though).

I just ordered one from SPEC directly. They are quite responsive by e-mail.

Racer price on the high clamp unit with a 3 puck disc and the LW machining option was pretty decent. WOuld be a good way to go for the ITB CRX, too. I'll report actual weights after I get it......

Cost/benefit analysis of the $199.00 aluminum option is debatable. I doubt that it would save much weight, since that's not really a very heavy part (the outer housing). That's all assuming they had orders for 10. I doubt we could round up 10 IT racers ready to drop that kinda dough al at once on a clutch.

We are developing some lightweight clutches, but I am not sure of the demand for the various models. Can you elaborate on the rules and the demand from your perspective.

Generally the rules (for SCCA IT and NASA Honda Challenge) state it has to bolt up to a stock flywheel, but past that you can lighten it, make it stronger, run a 3 puck, etc.

ITCS.D.1.m (ITCS p7)

paraphrasing: clutch disc and pressure plate are free provided they are of stock diameter and must bolt up to unmodified stock flywheel
