I recentally bought a crx 91 si, with a jdm d15 engine with a short shifter. the car is grinding from 2nd to 3rd at revs above 4k. the person i bought the car from didnt grind the gears, but it seems like everyone that i know grinds from 2nd to 3rd. i was wondering what the problem might be, perhaps involving my tranny. any information would be great.

 

maybe the previous owner abused the tranny and fucked up the synchros...

 

yup, sounds like the synchros sound like they are damaged

 

i took the car into a transmission specialist, and grinding stopped as soon as he drove it. i drove the car pretty hard today just to see if it really stopped, and it did. should i be concerned with this happening, or greatful that it stopped. eventually i'm probably going to have to replace the transmission of fix the syncros ... do you know how much it costs to do so (a fruff estimate)

 

$1 sez it's not the synchros..........but everyone who has no idea about the L3/S20/S40 trannys always blames them.........

Weak motor mounts and or broken 1-2 shifter fork cause most the grindage.

 

I have an '89 CRX Si with B16a swap and mine does the same damn thing from 2nd to 3rd somtimes 3rd to 4th if I shift really fast. I noticed that adjusting my clutch (Loosening the nut) helped it engage faster, and I haven't had it grind since.
