Default Schedule maintenance

Tomorrow my 99 ex v6 gets a new timing belt 95K miles on the engine. It says in the manual to have the valve clearance checked, Should I get this done o can I do it myself?

Unless you've either a Chiltons' or a Hayes repair manual which will prescribe the correct crankshaft positioning proceedure, a set of feeler gauges, the tools to turn the crankshaft and the patience of Jobe, I'd leave it to the Honda techs.
The service is a good thing to have done periodically.

If being done yourself you will save a lot of money by doing the valve cover gasket yourself alone. Otherwise only if you have a good knowledge of what you are doing or if you fell comfortable or know someone that will help you. Otherwise have the techs do it. Also if they (Honda) do it then it will be on Honda's records with your VIN and all dealerships will be able to see what work has been previously done.
Have them check your engine seals as well.

Well I asked and the Hone Technician said the V6 usually doesn't need a valve adjustment. So thanks for the replies guys

Out of curiosity, how much was the timing belt replacement, and was it done at the Honda dealer or at an independent mechanic?

My '99 will need a timing belt in about a year (on the 4 cyl. engines it's at 7 years or 105,000 miles). I know that the price might be a little different on the different engine, but it'll give me an idea of what to expect. Most of the maintenance I do myself, but I doubt I will try that one myself.

I have found that the V6 timing belt is easier than the 4's. Anyhow our dealership is high at around 850.00 for timing belt and w pump. around 1100.00 for all engine seals also. Ridiculous but that is what it is.

Anyhow if you can get the tool to hold your crank you could do it yourself in around 8 hours if you have not done one before. I think book time is like 4 or 5 hours. If you know your Honda guys locally you may get one to rent or borrow it for you.
Otherwise a lot of people say independant goes around 450.00ish for a t-belt job.
