Default Autometer Oil Pressure & Temp gauge

In addition to my gauges, I want to get oil pressure & temp. I know some think the temp is useless, but that's not the reason for my post.

My question is:
- Is electric more accurate than mechanical type? (especially the oil temp, since with mechanical, does the temp drop as it comes up the line to the gauge?
- I suppose full sweep electric is very accurate? since the price is like double the short sweep? I prefer more graduation in reading it.

If I were to do it over again, I would get the full sweep oil pressure gauge. I like the electrical setup with the short sweep, but I'd rather have the full sweep and have it be mech. As for the oil temp, I dont think that you can get an electric one. Im running the mech. one and its very accurate. When it gets hot enough inside the car, it heats up the gases in the line and Ive seen 150+ temps inside my car. Once you start driving and get air moving in the cabin it goes back down. The only thing I dont like about mine is that it starts @ 140 and continues up until 180 its in tiny #s. Once it reaches 180, the #s are bigger. Other then that I highly recomend an oil temp, it helps me know when I need to let my car sit and cool off a lil longer... As for the accuracy, most electrical are short sweep so its more of a general measurement on the gauge, with mech. exact temp can be seen. Thats really the only difference that Ive found.

Good Luck

Thanks for your suggestions, so you're saying that mechanical oil temp gauge is more accurate than electric short sweep?
anyone else agree or disagree?

Im not saying the actual measurement is more accurate then the other, just more percise when actually reading it, simply because there are more points on the full sweep then the short sweep which is more general.

That's what I thought you are saying. Thanks for the tip.

I've been using the AM mech oil temp gauge on my car for over 4 years, it's been working perfectly. I had an AM elect. oil pressure gauge on one of my DSMs and I really didn't trust it, it seemed to do funny things like read too high, and the sending unit was very susceptible to moisture and that would also change the readings.

So you think the mechanical one is accurate?

I think the mechanical gauge is less likely to malfunction due to weather because it doesn't have a sender, but I also hate the idea of bringing hot oil into my cabin.
