A couple of Noob questions... I'm starting a new project!
I am currently in the process of parting out my EJ1 turbo so I can pick up a EF Sedan and start a new project.
I have been searching around and reading threads for the last few days and I still have a few questions that I wasn't able to have answered through searching. I hope these haven't already been answered a million times.
Anyways. I am going to purchase a EF Sedan and the first thing I am going to do is swap the engine. There are two engines that I am debating between for a few different reasons.
The two I am thinking about are the d16z6 and the DOHC ZC.
The questions I have about them:
- DOHC ZC parts?
I work for an auto parts company so the availability of parts is extremely important to me. I get parts at a deep discount so I want to make sure that we carry parts for the DOHC ZC engine. Which car did the DOHC ZC engine originally come in and are there and USDM engines that are compatible?
If parts for this engine can't be found in regular auto parts stores than I won't buy it.
- Will any d-series cable tranny work with the DOHC ZC? Or, do I have to find a tranny specific to that engine?
- What all is needed to wire up a d16z6?
I've read about a million threads on this but am still not quite clear on the wiring. Will I need to do BOTH a DPFI ---> MPFI conversion AND an OBD0 ---> OBD1 conversion?
If I purchase an OBD0 --> OBD1 conversion harness will I still have to add more wires for the MPFI conversion, or, do these harnesses come complete with the extra injector wiring?
- What all is needed to swap in a d16z6 along with an OBD1 conversion?
This is what I've gathered:
1. d16z6 engine with IM, dizzy, etc.
2. 4-wire O2 sensor
3. p28 ecu
4. si cable tranny
5. OBD0 -> OBD1 conversion harness
Thanks for the help! I have spent most of my Honda life in the Forced Induction forum so I am a noob when it comes to EF stuff.

I can help with the Q? about the DOHC ZC
Yes most all the parts can be picked up for it at a local autoshop...most parts are for a 88-89 Integra.
And yes All D series Transmissions will bolt up to it.
And the Dohc ZC is a great platform to Boost!!
This is due to it having the largest posrts for intake and exhaust of any D-series, and Larry of Endyne even deemed them so large no portwork is necesary even when boosting.
and of course it is a DOHC..thats obviously better than a SOHC any day.....better tuning capabilities.
There are plenty of companies making aftermarket products for the dohc zc, not as much so as the sohc motors, but enough to get all the parts you will ever need.
Oh and if theres anymore questions you have about it go to http://www.thezcr.com
Im a member there and own a dohc zc, great site that is ZC specific!

Hey EJ1 wussup meng - Glad I can help you out with something I know since I'm always reading your replies in the FI section.
As far as motor components you will need the d16z6 motor with obd1 dizzy, 4 wire o2 sensor, any cable tranny you wish to run, any obd1 ecu and a jumper harness.
I recommend talking to blown90hatch ( LINK: http://www.jkobd.com/0to1.htm ) when it comes to a harness. Great Customer Service, Great Communication and the new harness come with an easy plug and play pigtail now. The on in the link would be the one you will need. I got mine from him and everything went smoothly. The wire harness already comes prepped for the MPFI ---> PGMFI if you are getting I think a STD or EX sedan. For the rest you will have to convert to MPFI but it would be easier if you just get an SI,HF,EX engine harness. If not you just have to throw all the wires for the 4 wire o2, vtec solenoid, MPFI-PGMFI, excetera. If I remenber correctly you have to switch around 2 wires in the dizzy plug but I don't think these is ness. in every swap.
If you can get your hands on a d16y8 intake manifold - I would go with one of those but if you can't the z6 one is fine.
As far as the cable tranny area be careful on what tranny you accquire. The 88-89 are different from the 90-91 cable tranny. The 88-89 come with a smaller clutch - PP,Disc,Flywheel. If you get a complete clutch kit for a 92 + tranny it will fit the 90-91 if you get the matching flywheel. If not it won't work plus it's a bigger biffier clutch. The 88-89 is a 20 spline disc if I remenber correctly and the 90-91 is a 21 spline so basically just count the splines on the shaft and you will know what you got. You can use the Clutch Disc from I think the 88-89 preludes on the 88-89 tranny and that is a biffier disc also. Here is a link that I posted for back in the day in references to the clutch and it's where I got recommened using the bigger 92+ setup. ( LINK: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=821219 ).
I think these is about it - If I wrote something confusing let me know since I'm kinda in a hurry on the way out the door for a date
and I got to get to the restaurant for the reservation -
but I think I wrote everything down right. If I made a mistake I apologizes.
For my last words - here is a link of a guy that recently did the swap in his 4dr and it's a nice write-up with pictures xcetera. I hope with everything I wrote you got what you needed. I had to go bigging up for these link
( LINK: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1318997 ).
Good Day,

Wow!
Thanks for all of the information!
I have been reading everything I can on thezcr.com all afternoon. Whew! I have a lot to learn!
I am happy to learn that there is so much support for the ZC engine, I wasn't aware that there were so many people with them. My best friend in high school had a ZC hatch that I used to think was the fastest car on the planet. LoL...
Now I'm leaning towards the ZC over the d16z6 because it seems like it will be easier to install and I won't have to mess with converting to OBD1.
I'm also thinking that when it's all said and done it will be cheaper to swap in the ZC than the d16z6... and this is definately a budget build.
Thanks again for the help! I will continue to read and learn so I can make a good decision about which engine to buy.
