Piston Replacement Cost
Hi all... I have a b18c7 (Aussie) and have the replacement stock pistons and rings. I just want to replace my existing pistons and rings just for maintenance purposes but after I rang some mechanic for a quote they said all these things like evening the block... might replace seals etc. I thought it would be like a few hundred dollars but he said its over the 1000 mark which includes labour to open the engine! Is this right? How much did anyone else have to pay to get their pistons replaced?
Any experiences with this will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Pistons are not a 'wear item'. Unless there's something wrong with the engine, its not worth tearing it apart.

Did read that right?

And RJ got it right.
As for maintenance... Just follow the service guide, If your caR sees heavy use then speed up the schedule.

Pistons actually can be a wear item. It will more than likely never be a problem of maintnance in a street car with mileage under 200,000. This may occur to be a problem in some crazy low r/s ratio car with way crazy sideloading force on the piston. But otherwise nadda
Ive seen cases were pistons can become egged. But alot of times it doesnt matter if the piston wears in an egg shape, because the cylinder walls usually follow suit as well.
Never say never.

The reason why I want to replace the pistons because I suspect that my pistons rings are wearing because in wot i get greyish smoke coming from my exhaust. I know it could be the car just compensating by putting more gas to prevent it from being lean during that time but I just wanted to make sure. But since its so expensive just to get it replaced (even though I have the parts) i'm not sure if I should go ahead with it. So for all the people that has this replaced... did you have to pay so much?

do a compression test, leakdown.. when i had ring damage, i could even hear the blowby.. you really hvae to find out if its piston rings and not headgasket or valve seals.. are you loosing oil? coolant? overheating? you gotta go over all of these things.. if oil loss isnt significant, you might still be o.k. for a while

Why are you opening up the motor? There's no point, unless you just want to waste money.

Can we get an update on this? I lose a lot of oil. To be more exact, I have to refill (4quarts) almost every 2 weeks. My mechanic believes that my piston rings are worn. He has done a compression test and he tells me that I am not losing any power. I dont believe he did a leak down test. Also, it does not overheat. Any help would be greatly appreciated......
Do you have oil all over the bottom of your car? Or are you burning it (that much would be noticeable with smoke coming from your exhaust)
That's a lot of oil!

Yep, do a leak down to be sure...

You peoples must remember that Leakdown tests do NOT test oil rings. You can still come out at under 5% leakdown and be burning oil like a ****. Honda has problems with their oil scraper rings. There really isnt a yes or no test for oil scrapers.
