Default Replacing catalytic converter w/ a muffler?

anyone done this?

I'd like to hack off my muffler and just run 2.5" piping catback to tip. I'm not into the bling, so i'd just have a rusty piece of pipe as my tailpipe. i have it like that now... no need to change.

I figured i'd loose some weight by removing the muffler. So, I'd like to just have either a resonated test pipe or a muffler in place of the cat.

The closest muffler I can find that fits the rough measurements of the cat is the dynomax race billet muffler.

the cat is roughly 15.5" long, with 2" inlet/outlet and i can safely have a 5" tall muffler before i run into ground clearance issues...or shifter clearance issues.

any ideas?

If you soley do track racing and by the looks of your sig it looks like you do, I'd have to say yes, remove the Cat and replace only with a test pipe. F*&CK the additional muffler except at the end. it's going 2 b hella loud in your car, but what the hell screaming down the straight will get you a lotta looks.

I actually had to edit this one....didn't realize you do track racing....lol...good luck.

thats a bad idea, imo. you're honestly not gonna loose that much weight, and anyway, i don't know what you have, but every hundred pounds you lose equals 1/10th of a second, roughly. the point of exhaust is to get the exhaust out of the engine as freely as possible, and i don't think putting a muffler in place of a cat and then running pipe all the way out is the best way to do that. just cut off the cat and run 2.5 in pipe to a muffler. at least, thats what i did, but its all up to you man

a cat doe snot serve as a noise suppressor but as a unit to burn your exhust again to help emissions but it does slow down the ehaust a bit so ot does make it a bit quieter, but to you could just put a muffler at the end of the exhust andit would flow good with good tone.

let me take a step back.

This car's sole purpose is to be tracked. I am currently in the stage of redoing a lot of things (rebuilding my engine with fresh new parts).

Iam looking at getting a RMF header w/ 2.5" collector, w/ 2.5" piping all the way back.

Now, currently, I have a 2" collector from my DC header and it goes into a stock cat, then out to 2.25" piping to a 3 chamber muffler. I originally had a straight thru muffler but found it unbearably loud on the street (this was when i was still driving it daily).

Now, I'm not AS bothered by the wail, otherwise I'd run a 2.5" pipe from the header all the way out the back of the car. But, it's irritating to me to have to hear the buzz, hence the idea of running a muffler in the cat's place.

Currently, the Bpipe section and muffler weighs roughly 50lbs or so. If i could lose that and simply run a 15lb pipe... awesome...

I'm at the point of where I'm looking for any type of reduction of weight available.

but, if there's no muffler that'll fit in the cat's place. I'll just run a test pipe and a different muffler.

my suggestiong would be to put in cherry bombs..which you can get at summit for under 20 bucks. they are cheap and really work great for helping conntrol the high end resonance and helps supress alot of the nasty volume while maintaning good flow. I have built race cars for drag and for ITA road racing. They work great for me.

On my street car..my setup is as follows. cat, cheery and then out the side just in front of the rear tire, tip is slotted like nascar style, (let me know if pics are needed) also this car is turboed so noise is supressed with the turbo. Its not loud, and it has a very mean rumble. I think most folks are suprised by how little noise it makes and the fact that its a mid 12 second car.

peace
