Default Taking Tranny Off: Have to take out both axles?

Like the title says, despite doing over 5 motor swaps, I've never taken off a tranny while the motor is still in the car. Manual says to take out the driver's side axle and intermediate shaft, is this neccessary to take off the tranny?, or does it make it a lot easier to get off?

yep pull the pass axle out, unbolt the intermediate shaft from the back of the block. If you pull the lower ball joints out first you can leave the axles in the hubs (just swing them out of the way).
