Window Net/Arm Restraints - SCCA Time Trials
I am preparing to begin competing in the SCCA Time Trials and safety regs require all cars to have a window net or arm restraints. I do not know much about either. Can a window net be mounted in a car with only a 4 pt rollbar or do you need a full cage (I have no idea how these things are mounted)?
What exactly are arm restraints and how do they work?

Typically the window net is mounted to the door bar and halo of a rollcage, but I suppose you could rig it to the floor and ceiling with bars and chains. Not sure you'd want it mounted to the window frame - if the door opened, the net would go with it.
Arm restraints have a band that goes around your forearm. These bands are attached to a bit of belt material, with a loop that is captured by the lap belt of the harness at the other end. When the lap belt is released, the arm restraint loops are free, so you can exit the car.

I do NASA Time Trials in my Miata. Since I don't have a hardtop I have to run the arm restraints.
Basically, the arm restraints connect to the crotch strap of a 5-point harness with a D ring. Off that D ring are two straps, one for each arms. Each straps loop around an arm using velcro.
The first time or two I used them it was kind of strange, then I got used to them and got the right adjustment. Like you know you want to be able to reach 5th gear. Now I don't even notice them any more.
I want to say they cost me around $50 and I got them thru a race shop around Virginia that the Madison Motorsports guys on here recommend.

How soon are you wanting to do this? Reason I say this is because they are getting ready to modify the Time Trials / SOLO I / SOLO II classifications. i think they are going to release it for 2006. Pretty much will have four stages of Time Trials (1, 2, 3, 4) - one HPDE, two Time Trials, three SOLO I, four Hillclimb (note: 1 and 2 may be modifed a bit more). Safety rules for 3 and 4 will stay the same (i.e. roll bar, suit, helmet, gloves, boots, socks, arm restraints/or net.

Yeah, I can see how they would be strange. Just sitting here at my desk trying to picture those things hooked around my arms gives me the *******...

I may try to do an event in October but it is looking more and more like I will start next year. Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to keep my eyes on the regulations.

That's already in place for the 2005 season. The arm restraints required are pretty simple... myself and most others are running the G-force ones.

Yeah, good people there.
As an aside, back when I was living in my condo my hawt neighbor's dog got loose. All I had handy was the arm restraints. I was a little worried she would freak out when she found the dog tethered with those but she was interested and it sparked a good conversation about my internizzle stunna raseka driver hobby.
I guess the moral of the story is get the safety equipment, it can only lead to good things.

Did you uh... use them to restrain her arms?
