Default Bearing Clearances ACL's on an LS/VTEC Block... Mains

Well... Was plastigauging, micropolished LS Crank in a B18A block. Platigauged the mains, All of the colors (when number and letter matched) were one color within green, besides one of the journals which was two colors off. I purchased a set of ACL's. The bearings all checked ... looked to be around .020. Factory spec I believe is .017, and negotiable up to .002. Any opinions on this? It's a close call, its on the upper side of .017-.020. I've heard the rod bearings must be dead on (haven't gauged the rods yet), since it takes more of a beating, but is that too loose (for the mains)?

That is definitely on the loose side. Im doing a turbo block now and even for 5-600 whp Im looking for around .0015 - .0017 on the mains and around .0019 on the rods.

I have the ACL bearings but unfortunately the first rod I guaged was .001 and of course too tight.

Do you have a copy of the honda bearing chart? If not search under creator name Earl and find that chart. It will help you size accordingly to get the clearance you want.

I have hurd it is good to have the mains at .0020 when building a motor for racing, your crank will be riding on more oil.

I did this to my motor with the OEM berings and it has bin running like a champ ever sence. 15psi b18b vtec Je pistons sotck rods

you ran it with .0020 clearance? I've also heard that .001-.003ish would be alright for the mains... anyone else?

I hope you have checked clearances with more than just plastigage. It's good to use to insure you have clearance but not for setting up clearances. For ACL Race Series Bearings applications we recommend .002 to .0025 for rods and .0025 to .003 for mains. some people like to run a little tighter for oil pressure problems but we do not recommend it. We also see dramatic longivity with these bearings compared to factory. If you have any questions, call me. 704-483-2202

.002 clearance is not really that big of a deal. just make sure run a little thicker oil and you'll be alright.
