Default Bought a crap tranny. Worth rebuilding it myself???

Well, a couple weeks ago I got a hold of a z6 tranny for my 97 LX and had a trusted local mechanic install it. I thought it was a steal with a >1000 mile clutch , and flywheel, starter. mounts and shift likage all included for $200. Ha! Immediately, I could tell something was badly wrong. The list:
- Sometimes grinds going into first at stop
- Grinds going into reverse
- Grinds going into 2nd and 3rd
- and the Piece de resistance --- it pops out of second gear under even gentle acceleration.

So... I have another tranny on the way from HMO (with a start-up warranty) and I am hoping the tranny in there now will hold out until the end of next week so I can get the new one thrown in there.

I have questions, however. Is is even remotely worth trying to repair/rebuild this broken tranny that will come out? What is the extent of the damage, do you suspect. If I can get an education and some valuable experience by rebuilding this thing for under $300 or so parts investment, I would consider it worth it.

Thanks in advance for all help.

no, no, no. rebuilding a transmission is nothing like rebuilding a motor, or anything else in a car for that matter. transmissions have more than 150 pieces involved in spinning and moving and is not something tht any amateur builder should even attempt. my brother just graduated from UTI and he doesnt even want to touch a transmission.

the problem with that tranny sounds way more than 300 dollars. with all the new parts that it sounds like you need, which includes three new synchros AND new gears, it sounds more like a 8 or 900 dollar problem. talk to a shop if you want to get it repaired.

It's not that big of a deal. It's not like it takes a rocket scientist to rebuild a tranny.

You need a Helms manual that covers the tranny you are working on.

FYI, rebuilding it won't be cheap. It'd be cheaper to just buy a used Z6 tranny.

If you just want to learn, start tearing apart the junker you have.

Try changing the transmission fluid. You may need to bleed your clutch slave cylinder.
