HC Brake Question?
I was interested in what brake set ups you Honda Challenge guys are running. There was a question posted to the Hybrid forum where a user wanted to know what would be a good brake set up for an EG with an H22. I responded with any decent pad would be an improvement, but it would not hurt to upgrade the brakes. I was answered with the following response. Most of the HC racers I know would argue with this statement. I'd like to know what the rest of you think?
"Hmm, let see, Honda Challenge, the premier Honda only racing series in America, the people who put the most amount of stress on their brakes, use? 99% Brembo blanks (stock size) and upgraded lines, pads, and fluids, stock calipers.
If a fully built race car doesn't need upgrade calipers I think he can survive getting groceries.
Remember you can't stop any faster than your tires will allow you. No matter what brake system you have, you can only brake to the threshold of the tire."

Depends on what the person wants to do. I don't race HC but have a "HCish" car. For the street and not driving like a jackass on the street fresh fluid, autozone blanks, and some slightly higher grade pads should be fine. If it is track work, then that is a different story. I am converting my brakes from the OEM CRX calipers which are small and flex way too much (which also causes too much pad taper). Even with fabricated brake ducts blowing on the rotors, I was thermal stress cracking the rotors in less than four hours. So for me (and I am still in the process of the upgrade) I am using Type R calipers and rotors. The caliper is so much bigger and beefier. I know several HC racers that use the set up and like it.

Keep in mind that in H5-H2 OEM brake components are mandated by rules.

and so are engines ... so if the guy is talking about an "EG with an H22" then it's more of an H1/HU brake question than a HC question.

Exactly!
Now also keep in mind what apexinghonda said. If this is a street car, then stock brakes with upgraded fluid, pads, lines will be fine. If it's a track car, then the stock brakes probably wont be up to the task. Depends what type of tires he is using and how hard he uses the brakes!

He did say that most HC racers would "argue" with his statments....

Hehe.
What I was trying to point out was this. If you need upgraded brakes for the street, you need to stop being a jackass on the street. If your upgrading them for the track, that is a different story.
Would I love to upgrade my brakes for HC4, sure. There are much cheaper set-ups to run that don't taper the pads and trap so much heat. But the rules as already stated clearly prohibit anyone in H2-H5 from changing the brake setup!

I do realize the rules state stock components for several classes, and other specification for others. I was referencing the EG H22 hatchback that started the topic, hence putting the car in the H1 category. I'm not trying to start an argument, I was just looking for what some people are doing to make some suggestions.

But you got your answer. It's actually pretty simple.
Street car- stock brakes!
Track car, upgraded brakes. Stock brakes will work, but upgrades will produce better braking.

Sorry, was referring to h2-h5 cars, didn't really make the link about eg/h22 being in H1. It was a stupid mistake on my part.
This was my point:
