Overheating, Check Engine, Smoking From 94 Accord EX
What up everyone. Aight my friend told me he things its a thermostat problem but I dont know. What happens is my thermo guage goes past the red marker and heats up like crazy. and after driving around for a little bit the check engine light will come on, and smoke starts comin from under the hood. i caught the smoke coming from under somewhere near the alternator. and when i drive there is a clanking noise like there is something in the engine from when i accelerate. and when i turn the car off and turn it back on, once the engine kicks on there is a few loud knocks that come from it and then it sounds regular. but once the car cools down for a while i dont have a problem at all except for about 10 min after driving when all happens again. so do you think its a thermostat problem or what?? thanks in advance
The temperature going way up like that is probably a bad thermostat, at least it's the first thing to try.
The smoke & clanking noises might be caused by you NOT shutting off the engine when it's overheating. Maybe there's more damage that the new thermostat isn't gonna fix.

you are most likely gonna have to rebuild or replace the engine. When it overheated it damaged something.
wow man why do u keep driving when temp gauge is on the red?? or let engine get so hot .........you could have turned a 100 dollar cost possible t-stat into thousand dollars cost if your carelness ruined the engine .......it happened once and then u kept on driving it like this?? man oh man have u even lifted uo the hood to see if u have a coolant leak?? coolant in radiator??
for ur sake i hope u did not ruin the engine

.....Lord , forgive him. For he knows not what he's doing.
I think a conversation with St Joseph (Patron saint for lost causes) is in order.

Glad it worked out
...and thanks for the report on what fixed it
You were lucky, driving while overheating usually leads to a really nasty outcome. Maybe "He" was looking after you after all !!!

I am rebuilding a dodge that was immediately pulled over and shut off as soon as the temp guage went to H. All Crank bearings are destroyed and two connecting rods look like someone chiseled them. This was caused in the short time to pull over to side of road and have the car towed home on a trailor. Plus the oil pickup tube was also clogged so I do not think it was a coolant overheat but an oil overheat. It happens alot to older cars that use heavy pennzoil during changes.
Either way, use this as a learning experience.

..and it's amazing that what was free flowing engine lubricant not more than 30 minutes ago, is now taking 20 minutes to drain, as it does a poor imitation of mo'lassas

I pulled a valve cover on a accord wagon and if I had waited 2 more weeks I would have had diamonds. Man this guy must have used pennzoil. There was more rock hard used to be sludge was oil 5 years ago than I have EVER seen
. I would hate to see oil pan and oil pick up tube/screen.
