Icon2 Possible engine damage?

The engine was left idling on my 2000 accord v-6 for possibly five hours. When I found the car, the engine had shut off and the check engine light was blinking. I'm not sure how long the car idled before shutting off but I would be less concerned had I found it running. The check engine had already been on for one day for an issue dealing with the fuel system. The car cranked and drove fine other than a slight whining sound coming from the motor. The coolant level looked normal. Will a motor automatically shut off if left unattended and should I be worried about anything because I need to drive this car on a pretty long trip? Thanks for any help.

More than likely it overheated. If it shut down by itself you probably have some serious damage.

Man I hope not. The car runs fine. I think I am just going to have the check engine light reset and see if anything different pops up. I know what has been causing the check engine light to come on but it rarely happens.

Why would you let your car idle that long?

Let nephew drive it and he left it idling and went to a friends house for a moment which turned into more than a moment.

No. The OP said it started and drove fine.
