Default Shifting Problems

My car is INCREDIBLY hard to shift into several gears. It's even worse when it comes to downshifting into second; it takes everything in my arm to get it into gear. Sometimes, even then, it makes a horrible grinding noise.

Now, I don't know exactly what the problem is. The car has 110k miles. My friend says it's probably not the transmission itself. The clutch isn't in great shape, but it's far from completely gone. It's "slipping in third." It also has a short shifter in it, which I am thinking is the culprit here. Also, the transmission fluid was changed at 90k. My shop put in "motor oil." Is that the problem? I don't remember what it was like before that because I barely drove the car. I drove it from the previous owners' house to the shop directly.

Any ideas? I'm gonna put in the original shifter tomorrow, to see if that alleviates the problem.

I've been on other sites, and according to other people it's either something with my clutch, whether it be the clutch itself, the pressure plate, or some kind of hose.

Or it's the tranny fluid, which isn't tranny fluid. It's just motor oil.

check your shift cables before you start throwing money at it. Just disconnect them from the tranny and see if the shifter moves freely or not.

It's pretty much only downshifting into second gear that's the problem. I just drove it, and it's extremely irritating to deal with it. I have to RAM it into gear sometimes.

It's been doing this for a long time.

I'm not sure about the motor oil in you tranny, as far as i know its 80w-90 gear oil that should be in there, some one back me up, my owners manual is way behind my shop. That might be the problem

try not to ram it, thatll wear down your synchros but considering your problem they might be on their last leg anyway.

only honda MTF (manual transmission fluid) should be put in your tranny. motor oil will owrk, but MTF will shift MUCH smoother. trust me. and you may want to also replace your clutch, and inspect the flywheel while it's off. i dunno if this sounds like a DIY project to you, but you and a couple buddies should be able to do this in one a weekend.

A lot of people are saying synchros. But the mileage is only 110k, which seems to be awfully low for a manual transmission to last.

I'm gonna put in the Honda MTF I bought today. If that doesn't work, I'll replace the clutch, which is starting to slip anyways.

Syncros don't have anything to do with it untill you let off the clutch do they? I would check out your clutch.

Even though I've modded the **** out of the car, I baby it like it crazy. I almost never floor it or anything like that. I NEVER powershift, or bounce off the rev limiter.

Now, maybe the car was abused before I bought it, but I dunno. The car was totalled last Tuesday, but it's almost all cosmetic so I'm either gonna part it out into a new Prelude, or fix the cosmetic body damage and have a new looking car. Either way, I'm gonna see about getting a new clutch and see if that solves the problem.
