adjusting idle- need help ASAP
i had a porblem with a surging idle so i got an IACV and a throttle body off of ebay. i put the IACV on a couple of weeks ago and didnt notice any difference. i just now put the throttlebody on and instead of surgng it holds 3000 at idle. i took the intake off and put my finger over the whole in the throttle body that goes to the IACV and the idle drops, but im not sure how far. what do need to do? need help ASAP!
first thing you need to do is "Don't Panic"...explain the problem a little bit better. Maybe you could tell us if you have a 1937 accord, or a 1956 accord with the cummins diesel engine.
Have you made sure the coolant is full and the engine block burped?
Have you tried turning down the "split screw" in the idle control valve?
Is there a little bit of slack in the throttle cable?
Did you spray around the area with some carb cleaner to check for vacum leaks?
Quit throwing parts at the problem, it is better to spend an hour to make an accurate diagnosis than to spend $100 on parts.

ok sorry. my car is a 94 non vtec. i have been bleeding the coolant every time i stop for the past few days, but i think ive done it so much that the coolant is running low so im going to fill it up tomorrow. im going to put the original throttlebody on tonight before going to bed because i think itd bebetter to have the surging idle than for it to hold at 3k. the split screw on the IAC, the only screw on the IAC i have thought many of times about adjusting it, but i cant figure out how. its like an allen head, but it only has 5 sides and i cant find any tool to fit it caue all allen head wrenches are 6 sides. the previous owner put a cold air intake on the car but he said it didnt start right after he put it on, it started a while afterwards. so i figured that meant the vacuum leak is one of the least likely choices. ive been told so many differnt things and i have tried to fix this problem for going on 6 months now. im about ready to just go to a honda dealership and so do whatever it takes and be ready to go broke when theyre finished. i may be wrong but i think the problem may be in the IAC because whenever i cover the whole that goes to it in the throttlebody the idle drops, not all the way but a good bit. i am willing to try anythin to fix this problem, but i know to go about it sensibly. i kept getting bad advice is why i kept throwing parts at it. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
It could possibly be the fast idle valve. There should be a little cover with two screws. Take that cover off and at an idle stick a finger down there and if you feel air flowing in then the valve is leaking.
Otherwise check all connections and make sure no hoses or tubes are broke or leaking.
Carb cleaner is a good suggestion.
There should be two holes in the TB. One will raise rpm a little and the other will lower it a little.
Good luck

where is the fast idle valve loctaed? so while the car is running i just take off the two screws and stick my finger in there to feel for air? are you sure this is on a 94? thanks
Yeah I believe the 94-97 locates them on the front left of the engine. So if you are looking at the engine from the front of the car it would be the right side of the engine in front of the air intake plenum. It will have two coolant lines running into it as well.

I think #1 is the adjusting screw, it's recessed in a hole above the throttle bore. Look for a procedure for setting "base idle". Probably consists of unplugging the IACV & adjusting for 450 or 500 rpm.
The holes they're talking about are IN the bore, outside of the throttle plate. You can't see them in this view angle, but looking from the front of the car you'll see them. They suck air in for the idle control (IACV, #19) & fast-idle (FITV, #14) valves. When the engine's warm, the FITV isn't supposed to be letting any air thru.
I think the little cover sauceja's talking about is where the label #14 is pointing. What I've heard is you want to check for loose parts in there.
once that idle screw is adjusted it will have to be held in place with some silicone or it will vibrate in or out. When you say a surging idle, what range of RPM did you see? It sounds alot like an air leak. Crank it while the engine is cool and get your hand around all of the vaccum hoses and connections including the throttle body . Your ears are the best diagnostic tool for air leaks and your hand will vary the pitch if you find one.
Yeah I believe it is #14. I am replacing that on my 89 Acc FI. There are O-rings in there and also the valves can stick over time. It is R&R as it is not really rebuildable.
All you need to do is adjust the load screw which is located right below the red hose on the trottle body. If that doesn't fix it it could be fast idle valve,or iacv.
i have put two other IACV on it and it didnt change anything. when i put another thottle body on it instead of surging it held around 3k. i have the coolant lines bypassing the throttle body but im going to hook them back up and then mess around with it and see what i can come up with. ill post my results next week due to the fact my car has to be at the police station all weekend.

do not replace fast idle valve.remove the cover, if u look in there there is a black valve that is slotted they usually get loose and let air through ,,, get a screwdriver and turn that valve down ,,,i have fixed dozen this way with surging idle

It "says" not to adjust this as it is only replacable. I am just going by what honda says. I have an 89 Accord FI that is doing this also. I ordered valve but parts did not come in on friday.
Does anybody else working for Honda have parts ordering issues? anyways when it stops raining I will check that desertH. I will post results from what I find if that fixes my problem.

like i said i have done a **** load of these adjustments especially on lxi accords ,,,,of course Honda says it is only replacable they want u to by a whole new part ..........WEll u got my advice to use it or leave it it is up to u.......it is either a few screwdrivers turns or a few $$$$ to buy a new one
Man where was this thread 2 weeks ago. Oh well I already ordered it but order did not come in friday. I will try this and thanks for the tip.
Otherwise Fast Idle Valve at dealership public cost is around 80.00 if not mistaken.

took the throttle body off, took the cover off the fast idle, and the valve fell into my hand. i tightened it back down and now it IDLES PERFECT!! thanks soo much to everyone who helped me. ive been trying to fix this thing since april, now when i stop i dont have to listen to it surge and everyone wont think im trying to race them(funny once when it was a turbo 300z) now i just need to fix my speedo/odometer, but thats another thread
