Default NOOB Oil Change Question. I'm gonna get flamed for this, I'm sure...

I have a '93 VTEC. My owner's manual has three different oil amounts listed, but for the VTEC it says I need 4.8L (5.1 US Qts). At the local dealership, they say I only need 4 Qts. Online it says I need 4.8 Qts. The parts dude @ the Autozone where I bought my oil says I need 4 Qts. Jiffy Lube says my car needs 4 Qts.

WTF!!!

I changed my oil, put 4 Qts in and checked the dipstick. It showed at the low end of fine (about 3mm above the lower line). I put another Qt in and it showed 1mm ABOVE the top line. So....how much oil does this goddam H22 need???

I'm pretty sure the dealership and autozone were telling you the minimum - and 4.8 qts must be the maximum.......go for the MIDDLE!....IMO....lol

Right? I figured "**** it" and I'd put 4qts in and then add until i reached the top of the dipstick line. Turns out that the 5.1qts that the owner's manual says to put in is a little high. That must be the total oil capacity. I probably still had about .25qts in the motor & sump. Ah well, at least I won't have to add any more oil for a while.

Thanks

I don't have my manual handy, but it gives two measurements: one for total (including filter capacity) and one not including the filter. If you changed the filter with the oil - and I hope you did - then you need the larger of the two it gives.
"It" being the owner's manual for your car. Once you have that, you don't need anyone else's opinion!

its at least 5 quarts, when u do the oil change and fill it up with 5 quarts it will be over the line, when u start the car and the oil circulates some of it will stay in places (ie oil filter) and you should be in between the lines after running the engine for a few minutes and letting it drip back down into the pan
