I have a 1999 4 cylinder Accord auto with 102,000 miles on it. I want to change the transmission fluid. What's the best way of doing this? Is there a drain plug on the transmission and how much fluid will come out when I remove it? Do I need to drain it, refill it, run the car for a short time and then repeat to replace the old fluid?

you would open the drain bolt and let the fluid drain out add between 3-5 quarts of fluid (add until it shows at the proper level on dipstick) and drive car for a few miles. repeat 2 or 3 more times. I would find a honda dealer with a wynns trans flush machine and have the trans flushed. I change my fluid once a year and it seems to work just fine. I drive about 10K a year

 

I vote for the complete trans fluid flush, It's the only way to get everything out and replace it with new fluid correctly.

Thanks guys, I do the dump and fill on my other car, I wondered if it was a normal thing to do on the Honda.

There is a drain plug on the lower part of the trans that has a 3/8" square hole in it.
Remove that plug with a 3/8" drive ratchet, clean off the second gear clutch pak material from the magnet attached to the drain plug. Reinstall the drain plug then put in 3 qts of genuine honda trans fluid.
No doubt some simpleton will now jump in and SHOUT the 'book' calls for 2.8 qts of trans fluid, but I've been doing this for over 22 years and have NEVER seen a honda trans hurt by having .2 qts extra fluid in it.

i just did mines yesterday but on a civic hx (1999 cvt auto), i stuck 3 quarts in and its barely reading the line on the dip stick? Would it be odd to add mor then 3 quarts?

Do you have the car sitting level?

 

is it absoltely neccesary to flush the tranny? i changed mine about 6K ago and just changed it like i would oil...didnt flush the tranny, is this a problem, shud i go back and do the whole thing over but this time flush it?

a few drain and refills, however is not a bad idea.

i agree. don't flush the trans.

 

i'm a noob, where is the drain plug located on the accord? will the pan be marked appropriately? wouldn't want to drain the brake fluid or something.

 

There is only one drain plug down there with a 3/8" drive hole in it. It's at the lowest part of the trans, so I doubt you can miss it. The engine oil drain plug has a bolt head on it, and it's on the engine oil pan. I change out 3 quarts every 15,000 miles, so hopefully I will never need a flush.

PS: re-using the crush-washer will do just fine.

I know but if you use the ones that use your transmission's internal pump, you should be OK. I would definately stay away from the ones that "power flush" versus the ones that are basically 2 large tanks with a hose going to eachone that attaches directly to your trans cooler lines.

Other then new filter, replacement fluid, drain pan, jacks and wrench, is there anything else I might need? Should I use those oil drain box soakers for the trans gunk?

from what im told, the accords dont have a serviceable transmisson filter

 

nope they don't. they have an internal one thats only accessed when shes cracked apart.

 

If I were you, I would open the fill plug first. That way, you won't be screwed if you drain the fluid and can't open the plug to fill it up!

no, the drain plug is where you drain the ATF fron. the dipstick is where you also fill the transmisson from.

 

i know that, but the person above me said to open the dipstick first.
