97-01 prelude timing reading
The Factory manual specs are 15 +/- 2 degrees. If the timing is out of that range, replace the ecu. there is no way to adjust the timing on a 5th gen. Was it fully warmed up? all accessories off? did you have the check connector connected? the check connector is passenger side, below the radio and all that. If all those things were good, your ecu is bad.

are you sure that you have to replace the ecu? i was searching and read that you can adjust it back to factory specs. or did i read that they did a manual conversion and was able to do it? anyone verify this?

no sir. that is straight from the FSM. It states: The timing is set to 15 +/- 2. if the timing is incorrect, replace the ecm. (The timing is not adjustable)
