Oil Consumption Problem?
Been changing my oil every 3000 miles with Mobil1. Noticed before a trip to vegas I was down to the bottom dot (this was about 1000 miles after the oil change). So I added a quart. Then I checked again today, about a month later and it was down to the bottom dot again. Not to mention the dipstick toob came out.
Does it sound like an oil consumption problem? I was thinking of switching to Redline since before it seemed I never burned that.
What is generally the solution to oil consumption problems? Replace the piston rings?

Burning oil? No way! Unheard of.
Dipstick t00b came out, holy crap!
Next thing you're going to tell us, is that your rear hatch latch sticks sometimes and it's hard to get into 3rd gear.
j/k... jb weld the tube back into place. Maybe your tube was leaking this whole time if you're lucky?
Otherwise, bore and hone, new pistons and rings... dunno, can you just rehone it and reuse the stock pistons? Probably not...

Add oil when the level is low.

That is what I was kind of hoping. I am thinking switching to Redline will help. Course, when I added the quart before Vegas we pretty much did 110 the whole way there, sometimes hitting 130, and back so it was hard driving, which could explain things.
I will do the JB weld once is cools down in about a month or so; way too hot out there right now for me to care enough.
I should probably start seriously looking in to a second car too.

If you driving at a constant 110 mph (what's that like 6000+ rpms on 4.4fd?) you gotta expect some burnt oil.

some burns less cuz it might have broken in properly and some burns more cuz may not be broken in right..

that could be. I've never owned a brand new itr motr and therefore never had the chance to break one in, or even have a clue as to how it was done with that motor

No, I knew some ITRs had one. I never experienced the problem until now. I don't think every member has this problem.
I just wasn't sure what people did when this happened.

Denial. I was like this too, until my oil level was down below bottom dot after a trip from Fremont, Ca to San Diego, Ca. I had just changed the oil before I left too.

ITRs consume oil???
ITRs consume oil???

Either:
Oil rings starting to go
Valve guides starting to go
Leak somewhere (any oil on the ground?)
Either way, just keep it topped up and drive the **** out of it.

Could be lucky and it's just a sticky PCV valve.

try thicker oil, like 5w40.. might be getting too hot and thin and passing through clearances.. otherwise switching to any other 5w30 won't make difference.. replace pcv valve, check for leaks (you say dipstick tube is loose? - that will definatel do it) and thats about it
In my case, stopping the use of Mobil 1 and going to conventional (Valvoline Max Life 10W-30) didn't cut down on oil consumption in any appreciable fashion. That was at about 65K miles. Also going to 10W-40 did make a difference in oil consumption, probably burned 1qt instead of 1.5quarts, but it totally zapped the snappiness in the motor IMO. There was a noticeable loss in power across the board, that all came back when I switched back to 10W-30 (since Max Life is almost never available in 5W-30).
