Default straight pipe exhaust

hello, i think i decided to screw paying $400+ on a exhaust system for my car that would only give me like maybe a 10 hp increase plus i dun wanna have some high performance exhaust on a stock engine, i think it looks and sounds ricey, but its more ricey when u just slap a muffler on stock piping and be like, dude my cars fast.

but anyway, i think im going to just get like a 2 to 2 1/4 inch pipe running from the header to maybe the back axle or something and thats it. ya i know its gonna be a little loud, but oh well, its way cheaper than buying a full exhaust kit

so my 2 questions are.... what do u guys think about going a straight pipe, what kinda shops could i get this piping from, and how much would it be. if all else fails i can just get my dad or my dads friend to weld it on since there both professional welders. but ya, need some advice from the experts

thx

straight pipe?

my '89DX performed better with a full exh system than when i drove it strait-pipe style. also, st-pipe is big time pig bait here.

So whats wrong with your stock exhaust? You did say it was a stock engine if I were you I would just drive the thing the way it is. If you insist on having a "straight pipe" buy a set of earmuffs and be prepared to get pulled over a few times for it. a straight muffler sounds like pure **** and after having this on one of my old cars back in my "ricer" days you couldnt pay ME to do it again. Look into the RSR or HKS exhaust systems and I can promise you it will be worth it.

i wouldnt go with a "straight pipe" unless you are putting out some good hp. you are going to lose a lot of torque.

you can build an "complete" exhaust system for your car w/o having to resort to the straight pipe, it will make your car sound loud and obnoxious. go to your nearest speed shop, muffler shop, auto parts store, etc... buy a resonator, some straight pipe and some u-bends your flanges, a decent free flowing muffler for the back, and a muffler tip if you want. i would go with 2 1/4" . if you dont know how many u-bends to get i would suggest 3 or 4. but figure out for yourself by looking at the stock exhaust. if your dad has a decent wirefeed machine it will be no problem for him.

take off your stock exhaust, lay it on the ground.. then you can cut and weld your u-bends according to what you need based off your stock exhaust, and making sure to check the fitment on the car itself. it will probably take u a good day to two to make, but its cheap, and at the end you have a mandrel style exhaust!

or option #2, buy the resonator, muffler and tip you want, take it to the nearest muffler shop, and get them to install it all. easier for you, bit more money, and probably wont be mandrel bend style. but if you dont have access to the tools you need, then it is a good option. hth
