Default Coating turbo VS. Heat blanket

What do you think works better, Coating a turbo from JetHot and/or HPC or a Heat Blanket on the turbo to keep heat concentrated?

thanks

i saw get it coated with jethot or use some of that thermal wrap. i know a few friends that have wrapped their manifolds with that wrap and def. keeps the bay a lot cooler

Swain tech for coating IMO, not shinny bling but works good, few friends have tried it. Thermal barrier coating = TBC. Stuff is like .015" thick
http://swaintech.com/header.html Also if they coat the inside then the heat doesn't get to the piece as easily, can do that with a wrap

I tried the turbo wrap on my sti, aparenty i did it wrong cuz i melted the silver blanket thing like it was cheese. i took it off so i didn't have a fire hazard. Me with turbo wrap = user error.

I have my full race mani and turbo exhaust housing thermal coated and after doing so, I am still going to get a turbo blanket. Seems like it will help more than the coatings do.

agreed...
if you protect the inside of the manifold with thermal coating... the material of the manifold will not see as much heat, making it less susceptable to cracking.

The "blanket" will reduce temps underhood dramatically. You can do a pull on the dyno and touch this thing bare-handed, and it will not burn you. Dont try that with the coating Not to mention, this blanket in particular looks dope and is hand made. Little shot of mine on the lexus:

I use both ceramic coating and heat wrap/blanket along with a custom heatshield. It depends on how much of a heat problem you have to go to that extent.

I have my manifold and turbo Thermo-coated by Olympic coatings. I can say that the heat under my hood is in check.

Okay, let's try to put this to sleep. Several things to consider when choosing coatings. Am I going for looks or performance enhancement. I think for either one, I would not choose the wraps.

If you are just going for show car looks, it really doesn't matter who you have to do your coatings. Just pick the one who has the highest luster.

If you are going for performance, it isn't just the coating, it is the complete process of preparation and and coating application. Performance applications include intake, exhaust (including turbo)header, downpipe, etc. Let's face it, if you can reduce underhood temps, in theory you will find power gains. Sure you can coat just the outside and it will help. If you coat the inside and outside, you are doubling the thermal barrier for the component. Also, If parts are properly prepped for coatings, you will not have any chipping or flaking.

What we do is make sure the part is completely clean. Then it is prepped for maximum adhesion. All of our coatings have been both laboratory and race tested to insure as low a failure rate as possible. We offer two coatings which have very good thermal barrier properties reducing heat migration.
-CoolBlack which is formulated for EGTs of up to 1700 - 1800 degrees.
-CoolChrome which is formulated for EGTs of up to 1100 - 1200 degrees.
I do have customers who use the CoolChrome for turbo exhaust housings that have experienced no failures.

We have a PhD on staff and are constantly testing our coatings to make sure we have the best product on the market.

Contact me if this doesn't answer your questions
