HC cage poll?
are ppl in HC taking advantage of the fact you can have unlimited cage in HC? or are most people keeping it conservative for IT legal so they can have more race options?

Start with the BEST and lightest IT legal cage you can afford. If you need extra bracing and seam welding you can add it later. Safety is the primary issue, followed by weight. You can always add stiffness (and more weight) later if its needed.
This was the strategy Pete Brock used for the BRE 510s... Keep the driver safe, build it light, and add reinforcements if/when necessary.

While I personally agree, this is not my perspective on the competitors in the ECHC. What I see is that the primary factor is cost.
Again, I completely agree with you that safety should be first and foremost, but that's not what I see around our paddock. Too many bolt ins IMO and quite frankly, I'd love to see them make cage rules stiffer (pardon the pun), mainly because I care about the folks I'm running with.

hahaha. you unbolted that from your backyard pool didn't you?? how are you going to get out of the pool now? you are going to turn into a prune if you stay in the water too long

I believe that most cages are too big and a heavy because the fabricator wanted to make sure the cage can withstand just about anything. I want my cage to deform a certain amount should I have an unfortunate meeting with another car or an immovable object. I will engineer my own cage and work with my fabricator (Sam Rothschild) to construct a light yet strong enough cage for my purposes.

Since Sam is our lead fabricator, you can see Sam's cages can be seen here on our AUTOCANNON site: http://www.autocannon.com/fabrication.htm

I'm in the process of SLOWLY building a HC/track only fun car. I didn't take advantage of the rules to build the ultimate cage. I just picked it up from Steen Chassis ( http://www.steenchassis.com )about 3 weeks ago. They do nice work on time.
Heres some pics.

Looks like they do a lot of drag cars. Is your cage going to be SCCA or NASA leagal?

I printed the NASA CCR and gave it to Gary and his crew. While they were building the cage I had to stop by so they can take measurements for the pedals and I noticed the diagonal bar they were mocking up was very close to my head. I asked them if they can mount it further away from me and Gary said that the diagonal bar has to be no more than 12 inches from the drivers corner in order to comply with the rules. THat showed me at least he read the damn thing, lol.
Im pretty sure the cage will pass tech, at least for NASA, not sure about SCCA. If it doesn't, I'm pretty sure that it will be minor things that need to be corrected. I asked Ryan a couple things about the car and he said it would be OK. They also built the cage for one of the S2000s that was in the Honda Challenge. I think he switched over to SCCA HOnda Cup.

i thought that in H2-h5 you were limited to 6 points, and could attach the cage to the car (aka main hoop, or a pilliar attachments) with a weight penelty.

there is mine, everything is pretty standard except the door bar on the drivers side. It is something that me and mike at calculated risks thought would be better then the conventional nascar door bars.
I had orignally seen this style when i was looking at FIA cages.

you can see in the rear that your lXl doesnt have the common one point attachement... unlike Slammed's rear section... and thats just by me looking at some pics while at work

that is correct... and it should be one common point... which means the rear bars, the X should meet in the same spot on the chassis.

I read the CCR and it states
15.6.11 Rear Braces
The main hoop must have two (2) braces extending to the rear. The braces shall be attached as near as possible to the top of the main hoop, and no more than six (6) inches below the top. The braces must not contain any bends. . The main hoop braces may be mounted at the rear shock mounts or suspension pickup points.....
Since it says it may be mounted on the shock mount/suspension pick-up, Steen Chassis mounted the rear brace to the support tube (not their fault IMO). I e-mailed NASA and they said that the rear brace will not pass tech, great.... I think they should change the rules stating that the rear brace MUST be mounted at the rear shock mount. They did offer a solution. They told me that if I run support bars in line with the rear downtubes that continue to the floorpan, it will pass. I guess I gotta go back to Steen.

IMO you read it wrong. The way i read it/ and they wrote it, was that MAY pertains to you having the option to mount it to the two given areas listed.
When going over a rule book if it doesn't say you can do it, its pretty safe to asume you can't do it.

Ah, I see your point and its a good one. But maybe a better way to word it is to say it must mount to the rear shock mount or suspension pick-up points. Since I didn't read the rules before I dropped off the car and I gave Steen a copy of the CCR regarding the cage, do you think they should correct the problem at no charge or should have I read the rules before I dropped off the car and told them exactly what needs to be done?
Guess that depends on how you look @ it.
It is pretty standard in the roadracing world that the two rear diagonals need to be attached to one of the two list areas. What I mean by that statement is that both of the major club racing orgs, NASA & SCCA, expect that you will interpret their rules to attach @ those points. Also, the CCR list two options for attachment. If the above three sentences are a given, and they are, it would seem it is on them to do it correctly.
PS Were you expressly give premission to alter the normal seat postion rearward? There isn't an allowance in the rules for that that I am aware of...... Or are you planning on running HU?

I was given permission to use floor mount pedals, I assumed that I can move the seat rearward. If I have to run HU, oh well...... If I cant run HOnda Challenge, oh well. I just want to have fun with this car without using Visa/MasterCard/Amex's help and before Cali home prices get out of hand, oops 2 late about home $$$$
