Its been done before.
I would honestly decide what your budget and what your goal is and go from there. I plan on running my d series and getting 200whp on 8lbs, it basically just depends on how much money you want to spend and what your goals are.

Swap, or build my SOHC?

Do searches on various set-ups, decide how much money you can REALLY afford to spend, and make an educated decision.

Amen to that brother.
My exact plans.

first, where are those hp #s from? if you don't have experience with making cars fast [which, no offense, it sounds like you don't], then 200 hp in a d series turbo will feel fast. Build the D for higher boost and you'll easily hit 300. Every project ends up costing a lot more than expected. It'd be tough financially to swap your motor and be able to slap a quality turbo setup on soon after. Build and turbo the D
Of course, if money isn't a problem, don't listen to me.

i'd go b-series, it's gonna be kinda hard to try and squeeze really huge numbers out of a d-series motor without some work, unless your on a budget i would go b-series, and if your planning on going h22 it's gonna be pretty tough, i know a few people with a h22 swap and it's pretty fast but your gonna sacrifice a few things.
sohc'em, keep the d' and buy a homemade turbo, but with good/new parts, and if you are going for 300, you would have to build it, but 200-210 has been reliably acheived on an internally stock engine, and you will be able to take almost all na swaps, and some boosted, if you seriously want to boost it, like me, keep the d, caz when every pound counts, the d weighs less, and can make 300 plus hp as so can the b's, two cars can have 300 hp, but the lighter one will almost always win

if you think 2-3k is cheap. When did D's become less reliable than a B?
