Default want to get into roadracing

hey, i got a 95 accord LX and i wunt to get into some form of roadracing...my autoshop teacher told me to look into SCCA showroom stock, but im planning on doing a few mods with my car, nothing major just the usual(I/H/E, rims+tire, suspension) and was wondering what other sanctioning bodys out there will let me race with that kind of set-up, i know there has to be something out there, i just havent heard of it...in the accord thread someone is racing there 95 accord in NASA(i think) honda challenge, where can i get more info on that? i just wunna know what are all my options, i live in portland oregon so im not to far from PIR(portland international raceway) so i know there has to be some kind of road racing i can get in on there

please dont flame me with the 'search dumbass' or 'google' it stuff, i dont know to much about the whole road racing scene yet, but im real interested in getting in on it, running the touge is just to scary for me

SCCA sucks in the NW, unfortunately. If all you care about is bringing home a 1st place trophy because you are the only car in class then SCCA is your home. Otherwise, if you want to learn to really race look toward ICSCC http://www.icscc.com/ for full classes and fields, racing, and a superior novice program.

Your car is too old for Showroom stock as well and NASA doesn't exist up here. For good racing with either NASA or SCCA you have to head to California or point the truck and trailer east for 40+ hours.

Rick,

Thanks for enlightening me from the usual stock replies to these types of questions.

I was actually searching for information on the ICSCC, after spotting a black BMW on a trailer, in a Target parking lot in Portland, while vacationing there last week.

Couldn't remember the car's number, or the class it was in, but it was a black BMW, on a trailer, in a Target parking lot, and I was there to see it.

I could also see cars on track at PIR after take off from PDX last Thursday. That was pretty cool. I'm definitely sitting on the left hand side of the plane, every time we depart from Portland from here on out.

Build the car to the class, dont build the car then find a class for it.

It sounds like you're still in school - I think your best bet is to get involved with autocross Road racing is quite expensive.

Start with the rule books like everybody said:

http://www.tankslapperautospor...id=14

That has links for NASA, SCCA, ICSSC, etc.

Then look into doing DE events in your area to build experience. All you need is a helmet and your car, without any mods.

You might as well tell him to move first. NASA is nowhere near his location.

wow, so amny postive replies, thanks everbody who replied...i was expecting to get flamed and bitched at by this newbie post...so autocrossing is my best bet huh? and im not looking to win any races, i just wunna get out on the track get some experiance and mainly just have fun...i guess i'll look into autocrossing though it doesnt sound as exciting as entering a hairpin while redlining in 4th gear but i guess i gotta start somewhere since its my daily driver from school/work and i cant really afford to smash it into a wall...what r some good sanctioning bodys for autocross in the NW? like stated before, i only know of SCCA

Autocrossing is as exciting as you let it be. It all depends on your mindset.

If you just want to go 140, you can do that on teh highway. If you want to drive the absolute limits of the car, autocrossing can let you do that. 10/10ths is still 10/10ths whether it is at 40 or 120.

Just look at it this way. You wont be able to afford to road race anytime soon, so when you can, would you rather be a complete novice, or have several years of car control experience under your belt?

Dude - have a heart. It's not nice to try to sell a 16-year-old a race car.

I ALMOST listened to the guy who told me to concentrate on school and not start racing until I had a career established - "Get a good job, then come and rent cars from me - instead of working for me."

You could do better and actually not spend any money on racing cars until you have that good job. It pays off in the long run, unless you want to be one of the zillions of ex-racers out there.

I think you really need to start off in autocross then graduate to timetrials (HPDE) events, *then* go to roadracing. Read up on HPDE events here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=972109

Are you trying to tell me that I am going to be an ex-racer? Hold on I think that is a collector calling me right now.

But seriously in regards to the original post. Start with auto x now, it will save you a ton of money (unless your parents have deep pockets) and it will teach you great car control. Then if you are looking for more speed and have some extra cash lying around do an hpde.

It is unbelievable what type of costs are incurred with road racing. Definitely something that is not feasible for most especially when still in school.

edit: too bad this thread makes it seem like Portland doesn't have much good racing. I was considering moving there in a couple years.

Danny - check out ICSCC. A bunch of the HC guys that were down from the NW at Infineon run with that group also (judging from the stickers on their cars).

Portland, huh? They are about as left as left gets. UC Berkeley could be relocated there and not miss a beat.

I think your reading too much into what has been posted. There is some great racing here in Washington, Oregon, and Canada. It just depends on the sanctioning body holding the race and the class you enter. There are some classes, ie SRF that you will only see at an SCCA race. The last ICSCC race at Pacific Raceways had 225 entries in 6 (+2 novice) race groups. Spokane had 337. No combined DE's or Porsche Club groups. SCCA OR region and NW region rarely see half that entry number without PC, Solo, and Vintage.

We currently have 5 tracks within 300 miles of one another and an additional three, one in Washington, one in Oregon, and one in Canada at various stages of developement.
