Default Safe to drive not in boost with no tune?

Thing is, I'm either going to save for the next year and purchase a DRAG kit OR, piece together my own kit and then drive 250ish miles to get my car chipped and tuned. Will it be safe as long as I stay out of boost?

250 miles is pretty damn far, I drove my car for two days (about 50 miles) untuned then i got it tuned, its runss a hell of a lot different then when it was untuned, rent a uhual thing like the DOC says.

I know if I get the Drag kit its comes with the horrible FMU, but would that be better than no tuning until I could get it tuned? If all else fails I will get the Uhaul though.
