Default Mysterious "suspension" arm on 97 Accord...?

Hello all! Im new here and i need some help! I want to lower my car with some coilovers, etc. There's a problem though, there is an extra "arm" in both rear side suspension. It's above the tires. It's kind of big and you can see it. It's right in front of the springs, connected to the chassis of the car and one of the arms. What is this part called and how can it be taken off? Im planning on getting 17's also and lowering it. Please give me some feedback, thanks!!!

this is called the upper control arm...it controls the camber of your wheels...by removing this, you will literally destroy your suspension, wheels, and probably car too (b/c you will most likely wreck)...DO NOT REMOVE THIS!

The arm that you're speaking of is called a Verticle link, and it is part of the rear Knuckle (refer link to illustration)

http://www.hondaautomotivepart...R+ARM

It is the one limiting factor for putting really wide rims on these cars
And no, you can't remove it.

If you can talk someone into redesigning it to accomodate wider rims, I'll buy a set. But until that time, you're Scr.....wed

Some online tire stores

http://www.tirerack.com (for one)

have 1st and 2nd oversize fitment programs where you input your vehicle type and they come back with rim / tire sizes that work.
It's either that or do the tried and true method of mounting a tire to the rim and mounting it to the car. It will become abundantly clear if it fits or not really quick

I'm pretty low on 18s and have no problems with hitting that. You might need to remove it temporarily to put the coilovers on but obviously put it back on!! Its not hard to take off...only 2 bolts

well i believe its 7.5 that you can put on the accord... if i remember correctly that is what mine are... but 7.... 7.5 not much difference... although i think it would be kinda funny to see the outcome of him removing the upper control arm from his vehicle
