Default Cam won't move.

Hey guys, gotta problem with the teg here. I just got my head back and put it in like yesterday. All was well until I had to get both my cams TDC. The exhaust cam moved without much hesitation, just a few turns and I got it there. But the intake cam didn't move. I could turn it like almost a quarter turn, but it wouldn't budge after that. The spring looks like it's compressed all the way when I turn the cam, so I'm guessing that's the problem?? That the resistance is coming from the cam lobes against the rockers??? I'm not sure. Also, could resistance be caused if the cam holders are torqued down a little tighter than it should be?? Helms said 7.2, but I got them down to about 10?? Can anyone help me out???

take a large hammer and hefty blade screwdriver to the edge of the cam gear

Have you backed off the valve springs all the way??When I installed my Crowers in my GSR I had a tough time getting them in until I realized that I had not completely backed off the valve springs . After that they went in way easy.

So your saying the head is ON the block and you are trying to turn the cams to TDC?

Make sure that you turn the crank so that ALL the pistons are half way between TDC and BDC.. otherwise the valves are hitting one of your piston tops, thats why it will not turn when you try to turn the cam.

Well I'll be damned....

But then how come the exhaust cam will move though?? If the exhaust valves aren't hitting, then doesn't that mean the intake shouldn't be either??

it depends... the crank could be at a position where the pistons aren't exactly at TDC on any cylinder but at a point were the ex. valve would clear but the intake won't.

remember - the ex. valve are smaller and don't have the same lift as the intake.

Ya, that's true. I didn't really think about that. Thanks for the reply man.

But, what if that doesn't work either?? What other possible scenarios could there be??? Don't wanna be difficult, I'm just a lazy ****, and I just wanna be able to figure this out soon.

I'm 99.9% sure that is the problem..

Only other thing it could be is that the cam is seized, but I doubt that.

Can you turn the cam in BOTH directions? ie. it'll turn only a few degrees in either direction and then stop, or it doesn't move period regardless of which direction you turn it?

I can turn it like almost a quarter turn either way, but then it'll just stop.

if the car is on tdc...the outside piston is up and the inside piston is down...and i u try to turn the ex cam...it wont go further than a half an inch because i think its hitting the pistons...so what i did was i installed everything along with the belt and the head then turn the crank counterclockwise...

If the pistons are in right, odds are the intake cam is 180 degrees off at the distributor. The slot on the cam is slight offset but you can put it on 180degrees off, and it'll bolt down like normal. If its in wrong, the intake cam won't roll over but the exhaust will.
