You've heard some of the mainstream psychobable like "...modern stress is acute because we're trapped between our circumstances and our "fight or flight mentality"?
We can no longer simply kill whom or what ever it is that's stressing us out, and we can't simply run away from every problem. We have to stay put, endure, and shave weeks and months off our biological potential.
Maybe you can make an argument that a competitive activity - like racing cars - gives us a place to indulge our fight or flight -itude.
But before you get there, you had an earlier primal impulse: "I can do That!"
Exactly whether that happens before or after "That looks like fun" isn't all that important I don't think - it's nearby somewhere unless deeper darker impulses are dominant "I can do That - and then I will own all the Hot Babes!"
This is I believe where we get into trouble. "I can do That".
I can do what? Drive the car? Sure you can. It's all the rest of the operation that your little primate brain didn't think thru before you started. Thank God for Evolution - thru experience you can evolve to learn that it's really about the money.
I've managed to distinguish a few discrete steps along this evolutionary trail. Now don't get into a tizzy about missing links or anything like that. This is a relatively young science, and I'm just a dilletante.
"I can do That" - HPDE in whatever you happened to already own.
"I can do That" - Racing in whatever you happened to already own.
"I can do That" - Racing in what you've determined you can afford after nearly extinctifying yourself racing what you had before. You know...like an ITC car.
"I can do That" - Drifting - I'm alienated...Drifting is my life...I don't care if it further alienates me - Good!...Drifting is my life...All these Hot Babes are making me Tired!
I'm pretty sure that this analysis has revealed just the tip of the iceberg, but you can see that we're looking at some pretty heavy implications.
We only think we know what we're doing.
My latest theory is to try to use this inescapable inheritance to my advantage. Next time I see somebody making alot of money by working smart and hard I've gotta say "I can do That".
Scott, who has to admit that his inner primate has so far out-thunk him at every turn...

Plainly, a philosopher. Thats right, one of the great (or not so great) thinkers of our day. I didnt think we had those around anymore.
Its too bad being a thinker doesnt pay. If it did, he may be able to spend more time on the track.

I'm a High School guidance counselor.
I also teach Sunday School on the weekends.
And I do volunteer work at the Zoo.
I sing in a Barbershop Quartet.
And I collect Dan Gurney for President buttons - I've got 108 of them!!!!.
Scott, who is just doing this stuff to get by till I hit the big time as a professional Drift Star.

No. We're just like what we're doing - until it drains us.
And all that inner-primate talk is nonsense; psycho-analytical babble keeping ivory tower academic types employed and relevant. If they were all for it, the primate paradox (if you will), you'd see them shitting behind bushes, eating with their hands and de-licing their "colleagues." Rather, you see them musing at cafes, sipping on lattes and boring us with oratories meant to convince us that what they're saying actually makes fuckall difference.
Such "theories" are mental masturbatory excercies to dull the painful reality that most of the responsibilites humans are expected to bear, suck. And theories like those, purporting a rift between man's inner whatever and his realworld suckage, allow us to assuage our utter indignation with this way of life and offer us an excuse to feel less like psychos when we come to hate the insitutions we've assembled for ourselves.

The fact is, primal "theories" are just hogwas to dillute the painful reality that most of the responsibilites humans are expected to bear, suck. No just referring to your "impulse" to abdicate all things when posed with becoming *gasp* irrelevant and go drifting and cruising for babes - maybe your innerself is tired of itself?
