automatic sedan tranny problem

automatic sedan tranny problem
just got a 89 sedan automatic has been sitting for a year and a half.
I got it running, and it has tranny fluid but it dosn't go into drive just revs, it goes into reverse and 1 but thats it.
what can fix this?

EDIT: as far as i know there is a cable going from the throttle to the tranny. it has somthing to do with the way it shifts and when. if that broke the tranny thinks it's just costing all the time. thats where i'd check
