94 GS-R motor in 97 Civic legal?
I want to get some opinions on this because there is a cheap 94 B18C that has a lot of mods on it. I have a 97 civic, and the shop that is doing it claims that if it changes a couple of things, like the intake manifold that B.A.R. will pass it.
3 questions: Is there a way for B.A.R. to tell that its a 94? Can mods like changing the intake manifold and small other things make the car LOOK like its a 97 so B.A.R. wont know the difference? And, should i just simply opt for a 97 or older engine for about $4k more?

I forgot about that! The engine itself has a vin #, doesnt it?!

I see that your in california. Im pretty sure that you wont pass. The motor has to be 97+, meaning obd2. Your going to need a crank angle sensor and knock sensor also, that is only in the 96+ b18c1's. I guess you could give it a shot, maybe you can get away with it.

Is there a way that I could run the Vin # on an engine im trying to buy, to make sure its the right year?

Well from what the other guy is saying, it sounds like they would just run the Vin # of the engine and fail me on the spot. The shop was saying that i could change the intake manifold and other things so that i would have the crank angle sensor, knock sensor and other OBD 2 thingies.

The free version of carfax will tell you the year of the vehicle, but wont give you the detailed information unless you pay for a full report.
You can run the vin and find out what year/car it belongs to.

Is there a VIN for JDM? This is a JDM engine, and all i saw was a B18C1 stamp with a bunch of small numbers under it. Is the VIN stamp somewhere else?

In order to run a crank angle sensor , you need an obd2 crank gear ( on timing belt) that has teeth sticking out on the back, for the sensor to read. I think your better off buying this motor, since you can get a good deal on it, sell it for a 97+ gsr motor.
