engine knocking/rattling at 3k+ RPM
yesterday i noticed my car was making a rattlling or kocking noise, i thought it might be a loose exhaust bolt but wasnt sure. i took it to redline and it just got louder so i knew it wasnt a bolt. this morning when i turned on my car it did again cuz the idle was high from it being cold so i popped the hood and revved it to see where it was coming from and its coming from the engine for sure. im thinking it could just be a valve and i need to adjust it and it will be fine but ive never heard what that sounds like so im not sure.
stock z6 with cai and 97k miles.
thanks in advance

check your oil.....it could be a valve adjustment or it could be a rod knock.. it depends on if its a tick tick or a knock knock... do you have a loss in power? i had a mazda protogee that sounded like a rod knock i checked the oil and it was dry put oil in it and it was fine
k i just checked my oil. i pulled it out wiped it off and pulled it back out and it was bone dry!! i just changed my oil like 1000 miles ago and i got under and there is a leak, its just drops but it looks like the driver side of my block where it connects to the oil pan is coverd in it. could this be the problem?
Yea, that could definately be the problem. Try and locate exactly where the leak is and replace the gasket or seal that caused it, along with your PCV valve.
If it is on the drivers side of the oil pan and there is oil above the pan it is probably your front crank seal.

If it's a knock man I would do more than worry about the oil leak. If you add oil and it's still knocking chances are you're going to have a thrown rod through the block very soon. When my oil pump failed on my Y8 I had about 2 weeks before a rod went through the block. Take it apart now and verify that everything is ok before you start redlining it again.

Yea but he might as well fix the oil leak. My Y7 went almost a year with a rod knock. You know what that means? Absolutely nothing because this isn't my motor or your motor that we are talking about. ALL engines are different, no two are exactly the same.

I fail to see your point? Yes every engine is different. All I'm saying is do a little preventative maintenance. Take a look at "A" while you are fixing "B." That's all man. I'm not disregarding the importance of fixing the oil leak. I'm merely adding to your original post by saying "Hey, while you're fixing the oil leak, check out your block."

I gotcha, I thought you were trying to say forget about the oil leak. I need to start sleeping more and working less.

at idle u cant really hear but i put a screwdriver to the valve cover and you can hear ticking but thats it, u cant really hear anything untill it gets to like 3000 then its more of a knock/rattle than a tick so im starting to assume its a rod knock. ive been shifting under 2500 and taking it easy......i need to drive it cuz its my only car so i dont really have a choice but it seems fine when i drive it like that. if i do get a hole in my block will my tranny and head still be good?
maybe i can finally get my b18

theres not really any guarantee that your head will be good if you keep driving it like that. tranny yes, and it does sound like you have a rod knocking, you said u checked your oil and it was bone dry? ? but dont keep driving it because eventually you will put a whole in your block and you will start to overheat it,not good if you want to keep your head(may end up warping it) i wouldnt keep driving it,it sucks though, its happened to me before. good luck.

My head and tranny we're fine. I replaced my Y8 block with a Z6 block and kept the Y8 head and intake manifold and kept it ODB2.

yea listen to B_series_ he's been through 2 motors because of a rod, so......... he really knows how that feels.

so what will happen if i keep enough oil in there and keep it under 3000?
i mean cuz i honestly cant afford a new engine and this is my only car so i NEED to drive it. i know your gonna say a d16 is only like 400 bucks but i dont have that kinda money to buy a new engine

k i put 2 quarts in cuz thats all i had and i revved it untill iheard it and it sounds like its coming from the head and not the block. at idle i can hear a tick like its the valves and then the ticking gets louder and then at around 3k it sounds like something is being thrown around but it still comes fromthe head. could it be the piston hitting the valve?

If a piston was hitting a valve the motor would not be running any more. If it is coming from the head it is proably your valves. They can make a knocking sounds as well.

o god i hope its the valves. if i pull the vavle cover off do i need a new gasket and/or any kinda of goo stuff? and what exaclty would i looking for, just if anythings loose?
You could get a new gasket or get a product from permatex called "The Right Stuff: FOr Imports"(excellent gasket maker)
Give me a minute and I might be able to give you the part number.

ok so i just drove my car and now im starting to think its the head....if i take off my valve cover can is there something i can look for or do i need a feeler gauge? i know i need one to check and adjust the valves but is there anything i can look for in the mean time?
