loose header, what are my options?
So since I bought my car, it's had a ballsy roar to it. Well it ain't the exhaust, the muffler shops say it's the engine. It's not the air intake, the roar has been there before I switched that. It gets louder the higher the RPMs. It's too loud to have a decent conversation at highway speeds. I checked the header and there is a bolt just stuck in there. The bolt coming from the cylinder head must have been broken off. So the guy I bought it from must have just stuck a bolt in there to look good. ******! He told me he had switched his header out of the car before he sold it to me. Maybe he didn't use a new gasket when he switched them. The header is rusty but looks like it's in good condition. I don't need a new cylinder head do I? Can I fasten a new bolt on? Or would a new gasket maybe solve the problem?
It's loud but not too loud. But I'm sick of it. Please help me get rid of this annoying roar!

I'd replace the exhaust mani gasket and replace any broken/missing studs. That should solve the problem. They sell a tool that'll remove a broken stud that's stuck in the head......forget what it's called.
Also make sure it's not coming from a bad seal between the upper part of the manifold and the downpipe......or the downpipe and the cat.

anyone actually replace a broken stud with the engine in the car? theres not a lot of room in there. will a right angle attachment work ok?
it was f'ing pain in the *** to get that broken stud out of my head...i did it with the head off the car even...yeah there really isnt much room to work with when the head is still on but it should be enough to get the drill in there...
for the original poster. is the stud broken inside the head where there is no thread sticking out? if the thread is visible just lock a nut onto it and it should screw out

Broken bolt in head = sucky
Happened to me twice during the engine rebuild. The easy out works well if you are patient. Also, if you have to drill (assuming you do if there is no part of the bolt sticking out that you can tap out), make sure to add oil so you don't round off the drill bit.

my b16 has one broken i bought a mr gasket copper gasket(its softer than factory and seals better) and just goobered some super high temp silicone (ultra copperII)around the place the stud is broken, the heat doesnt melt the silicone and it doesnt leak

sounds iffy to just throw some sealant at it. it would be better than it is now. but i don't like half-assing things. i have yet to take off the manifold, and look at it. hopefully it has thread sticking out. ****! i guess i have the whole day tomorrow. i'm in between jobs (really), so i have the time.
thanks for the input, you guys are awesome.

well, pulled the header. gasket looked decent, replaced it anyhow. wasn't a broken stud, it was a missing stud. jb welded one in and bolted the header back on. same sound! oh well, it was cheap to work on. should have put on a skunk2 while it was off. whatever, that would only make it louder anyway. now i'm thinking the intake manifold might be the source.... maybe just a loud engine? wish i could give this thread a happy ending.
