i found a 2000 S2k with 72k miles for $12k. blue book is 16. i was just wondering if there was any probs with the first year models.. if there were any kinks that had to be worked out or anything like that. info appreciated.. TIA
make sure recalls were done, check the back plastic window and see its condition. other than that, make sure all maintenance was done, the usual

If it sounds too good to be true, then... Well you know the rest.
That price is impossibly low for the used S2000 market, even a rebuilt savlage title, and especially low for the California used market.
Caveat emptor.

It does sounds like it's got a bad title or the seller is just trying to scam you and doesn't have the car. Maybe they are an idiot but don't get cocky thinking you've found a great deal(Not that I'm saying you are... Just a warning).

i just talked to the owner and he said that it has a clean title, and it has been routinely maintained. he says he lost his job and has moved to indiana, and the car is still here in sacramento, and he is selling it to pay off his bills and loans that he currently has. KBB is 16.2k and he says that its clean and smoke free.... sound too good to be true??

This is a common MO for scams. Do carfax and inspection if you proceed.

That story sounds all too familiar to the typical scam...
"The car is in X, but I moved to Y. But I really need to sell it fast. Please send a check to [insert shadey escrow company here] as a deposit."
The guy certainly can't be hurting for money that bady if he is willing to sell the car for the crackhead price 3/4 of market value. Again, even a rebuilt salvage title car would command more money than what he is asking.
It's pretty obviously a scam, IMHO. But you can certainly follow up with the guy to see what he wants to do. Just do not give anyone any money...

exactly, this is the email i just got back from him...
Hi ,
I can personally deliver the car if you decide to buy it or i can
ship
it with Das Auto Shippers (www.dasautoshippers.com), but i will need
the
payment to be made before i do that as i don't want to make the trip to
CA
in vain. I know that $12,600 is a big amount so, to get started i will
need
a $6,000 downpayment, and the ballance after you inspect the car.
I am a Square Trade member and I want to make the deal thru
them. They will act like a THIRD PARTY and we will be both protected. I
will
give you a few days to test the car and to see that nothing is wrong
with
it.I made few deals on eBay in this way and it worked very well.So if
you
want to proceed with the deal please send me your full name and address
needed for the papers and shipping.
Here are the steps of the deal :
1.The Seller will open the transaction --> 2.The buyer has to
make
the payment to Square Trade Financial Department --> 3.The Seller will
receive the confirmation that the payment is
done --> 4.The seller will ship the item to the buyer -->5.The buyer
will
contact Square Trade
to tell them if he is satisfied or not --> 6.Square Trade will release
the
money to the
seller(in case the buyer is satisfied) and to the buyer(in case that he
is
not satisfied).
So,please read this email twice and let me know.I hope you agree
with
me,because I think that it is the best way to protect both(seller and
buyer).
Just email me back and let me know
Pierre
i sent another email back saying i'd pay a lil extra for him to fly back here, and im still waiting for his reply... so we'll see what happens...

Next email, tell him you'll pay a little extra for him to come physically screw you in the ***, since he's obviously trying to do it over the internet...lol, see what he says...
He's trying to make Square Trade out to be an escrow service. They are NOT. Square Trade is a dispute mediation service. SQUARE TRADE DOES NOT DO ESCROW SERVICE!
They often throw around the name Square Trade as a misdirection. What the scammer does next is send you a phoney email that the scammer makes to look like it came from Square Trade. It's fake. But it will ask you to transfer money to Square Trade. But in reality, you are sending cash direct to the scammer.
So then at that point, your money is in the scammer's hands. So you contact Square Trade to find out what happened. And of course SQuare Trade says, "we've never heard of you or the seller."

I bought my S2000 for 12.5 with 71 thousand on it. It has a rebuilt title from a stolen recovery supposedly. I ragged the **** out of it when I test drove it and it drove just like it was supposed to. Can't wait to find another one at that price.
