Default 1992 LX with 1.6L???

I'm about to buy a 1992 4 door civic LX.. the owner said he blew the last engine since it was drivin like **** so he could get a new one from the dealership.. it's a 1.6L so I was thinking it could be an EX but I don't hear VTEC engaging when he revs it up to 6000 RPM.. also, could I just swap a ex head & ecu on it with out problems? Would it raise or lower compression?

Why don't you look at the engine code? Not all 1.6's are VTEC, it could be a D16Y7, also look at the ECU, if it's a VTEC motor and you can't feel VTEC, maybe the ECU is the stock dx.
