Default Clutch & Transmission care

Hi,

So it turns out that I have to change my clutch (97k on it) finally. That, I didn't mind as much because I figured it's a normal wear-n-tear. However, I have to change 9 bearings (I think that's all of them) in my transmission as well. I noticed noise coming out from somewhere so I decided to go get it checked out. But apparently, I noticed it too late.

Anyhow, it has turned into a costly repair, and I'd like to avoid that in the future if possible. I'm wondering what are some of the signs that I should go get my clutch checked out? I'm guessing that if I would've caught this early enough, my clutch would've been the only thing that needs to be replaced. But I suppose I waited too much from the signs that I should've picked up, so the damage went as far as the 9th bearing in my transmission.

Any ideas on how to keep my car from getting these kinds of damage will be awesome!

Thanks!

Can't really stop normal wear and tear but to increase longevity of the transmission is by change the tranny fluid with Honda MTF with every other oil change.

I couldnt agree more!!! Recently tried synchro mesh to see what all the hype was about. Well, other than the **** was 11 dollars a bottle I think it made the grinds in my trans more noticeable. I will never use the stuff again, HONDA MTF all the way!!!

The frequency of changing your MTF should depend on your driving style. I, for instance, have used Redline MTF in my 94 GSR tranny and it still shifts like butter. Every other oil change is necessary I guess if you're on the track often.

So the transmission getting worn out is just a normal wear too? I couldn't have prevented it by noticing that the clutch was going bad?

How odd, that seems to be the total opposite of the general consensus.

When a clutch gets that bad, you are definitely going to notice it.

The biggest problem with the transmissions is that people do forget that it's an important part of the maintenance programme. The cars are getting old now, and people are losing their manuals and records, and it's easy to forget about the transmission oil.

I probably go too far the other direction, and change the tranmission oil after every track event, so it's going to get changed six or seven times per year. The oil changes are cheap.

wait, my car has 45k miles on it, and I have not change the transmission fluid once.

Is that bad? I only know how to oil change myself, not the transmission fluid. I think it costs a lot for a shop to do it.

It's not all that hard to do it yourself. Most of us make do w/a hose attached to a funnel.

But it's also not expensive to get a local shop to do it. I'd make sure you use Honda MTF to be safe, even if you end up buying it yourself and taking it to them.

There are sizeable minorities at Honda Tech who support the use of one aftermarket fluid or another, and I do not necessarily mean to say that what they are using is wrong. The Honda MTF is cheap enough, and I change the oil often enough, that I think it's fine to just use that.

Use honda MTF. I used motul in my ranny and it was good but the difference in shifting betwee nthe two kinds was slight.

Mind u Honda MTF costs me half everytime I change.

Good luck.

It was very odd to me also. I dont know what people are talking about, I ruled that everyone spends so damn much on this crap that theyre too afraid to say that it truly sucks.

I've been running Honda MTF in every honda I've owned, Next tranny change will be alot sooner this time and I will go back to Honda stuff.

the way i look at it, with my driving style and minimal autocrosses (1 or 2 per year), i change my oil every 2000-2500k, transmission fluid every 10-20k, and recently my clutch was having varying friction points so i replaced that fluid after 60k. now i will make sure to change the clutch fluid 10-20k. oh, btw i change my brake fluid just about every 10-20k as well. it will never hurt to change fluids more frequently.

Hey guys,

So I got my clutch replaced and transmission rebuilt. It drives nice but I'm wondering if the clutch feels super light because of some adjustment, or because it needs to get broken into.

I'm wondering if others have changed their clutch resulting in something really light.

Thanks!

P.S. No more noise though!
