Default Very OT: Week vacation in England. Suggestions?

This is pretty far off the beaten path but this is a diverse group and you never know who can share interesting experiences:

The last week of August my wife and I are going to spend vacation in England and we are looking for things of interest. It is a tie-in with a business trip so the company pays my flight and we thought we'd use frequent flyer points and get my wife over there for free as well. Our intention is to rent a car and pretty much stay the heck out of London and cruise the country on a small budget and stay in cheap B&Bs and guest houses. We arrive on Monday morning the 29th and I fly to Holland on Sunday morning the 4th. My wife has plans for the Friday and Saturday doing English horse stuff (some major cross-country event and tour some horse farms). With the rest being weekdays, we don't have much option to see any car racing.

I am going to try to use Koni conenctions to get a tour of Red Bull F1 facilties (I've been through BAR and it was cool) but that may be most of the motorsport activity unless I can find some cool museums. Our thought is to basically do a big, clockwise circle from the south of London down to Dover (the white cliffs) then head west to the Cotswolds then north and east back to horse country in Newmarket.

Anyone been there and have input on what to see? I need to brush up on road signs too as I drove in England once before about four years ago but had to guess at some meanings. Never figured out what the zig-zag lines on both sides of the road really meant but normaly the road got narrower soon thereafter.

While you are in Dover, take a tour of the network of tunnels that were used as defense/ hideouts during the war. Very cool stuff!

ummmm, pub grub......yum!

Lee, while in London, take the ?550? steps to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral, GREAT view of downtown London.

If you can, and I know it is a hike, go to Edinborough Scotland.

God, I have to get back to England!

I found that after walking an average of 15 miles per day playing tourist, that a pint of beer and pub grub tasted like the best thing EVAR!

Hey Lee -

Sounds like a great trip! My wife and I went to England for our honeymoon and had a great time. It's totally great going to a foreign country and still being able to read the menu, signs, etc. Also the British have that great, dry sense of humor.

I thought the food over there was good, maybe not the best. Don't trust SJR's opinion at all, he's one of those French snobs. The beer is also very good - they do have some of the warmer ales but most bars also have cold draft beer now too.

If you have time to get a travel book, I recommend ordering Rick Steve's England guide asap. His Europe Through The Back Door series is great - he really cuts out alot of the filler, has great walking/driving tours, and recommends smaller towns where you can really interact with people and experience the country. (www.ricksteves.com or also available thru Amazon, your local Borders, etc).

We lucked out and got a place to stay in York, which is about half way between London and Edinborough. It is a great old city surrounded by a town wall. There are probably 300+ different, individual, awesome little pubs in the city. From there we took day trips to Whitby, a seaside English fishing town, and Edinborough, which as noted is just awesome.

Of course, if you can see the Red Bull facilities or do a couple laps of Silverstone go for it.

Later,

- Mark

I'll second that. Edinburgh is definitely worth the drive if you have the time.

We were there earlier this year and had a fantastic time in Bath. Sharon dug it because it's where Jane Austin (Pride and Prejudice) was from and is home to the Jane Austin museum. I liked it because it is home of Future Publishing and a crap-load of car magazine offices and editors. It is a very well preserved, historical city.

Our B&B was right across the street from a great pub that served Smiles ale and Old Speckled Hen. Also had a dessert called Spotted Dick... Driving between Bath and London is only 2-3 hours and takes you right by Stone Henge. (Also though Lower Limpey Stoke, which is just plain fun to say...) More details available upon request.

Have a great time.

Good input, I will look into it.

Scotland, Ireland and London will have to be another trip. This is a short pop-up opportunity that we are taking so we can't take more time and don't have much budget set aside. We'd like to take our young son to the UK as his first international travel since the language will be in our favor (to a certain extent) but that will be at another time when hopefully the security situation in London is more calm.

Rick Steves is defiantely "travel geek extrordinairre" and the very first thing we did was to buy his book of England. We have limited interest in seeing the churches and museums that he leans heavily on but his stuff is a must have as far as we are concerned. Two years ago, we took 10 days across Holland, Bavarian Germany, and Austria and stumbled upon his books that helped us a lot. Since then we watch his TV shows and it has greatly fuelled an interest in international travel. Anyone doing international vacationing should check into his works as I think it gives a lot of insights, cost reduction and general tourismo reduction while helping prioritize the sights.

Like German food from our previous trip, my experience with English food is that is it defiantely of interest but not what one considers "fine dining" in the long run. Once you have tripped through the various sausages and things like meat pies, bangers and mash, assorted "a meat and a starch" meals. etc. then it thins out quickly. I'm cool with that but my wife is a bit more snobbish on food. I must hit a pub or two as although really not a beer drinker, I did appreciate several of the brit beers. My favorite from the pubs though...cider!

If you like Indian food, London has better food than most of India I have been to!

Also the London Dunguens was cool once.. and if I still lived there I would go to the Caterham factory.. Fake an interest in their car and you will get the ride of your life!

Yes, I am very interested as we have been told that the Cotswolds area is a must-see and I was just looking into Bath last night. Any insight would be appreicated. Please feel free to email me at lee@koni-na.com if you'd rather not post it.

Not that interested on the big English Literature scene and Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon but I hear that is great countryside England. I'd love to see any car stuff if possible and have already noted that Demon Tweek's showroom is a bit farther north in Wrexham. I might have some interest in Stonehenge (it only makes me thing of Spinal Tap) but I hear there are more interesting super ancient ruins out there. Anyone know where the huge Druidic Horse drawings are in the hillside?

The best part about England is that since everyone drives on the left side of the road, you have the right side to yourself.

Their beer is better. Just make sure it wasn't stored in a Lucas refirgerator....

That might be interesting, I had wondered about trying to see any of the small Brit car factories. KONI is OE on Morgan so maybe there is an opportunity there too. While in Germany, we visited the BMW Munich factory and museum (factory good, museum is not that hot) and the Audi museum in Ingolstadt (a must see!).

Since Rover is dead, the main Brit car make is gone but there are so many smaller marques that maybe we could see something...Bentley, Rolls, Morgan, Lotus, Caterham, etc. Once again, time is the limiting factor.

if you talk to Luke he may have some input since he lives in England. There are also other HT members who are from the UK. Ive been in the UK for 10 months but most of my touring has been in London.

the pound is strong vs. the dollar so your money wont go as far as in the US.

That is true, the national dish is now a curry.

I've been to the UK quite a few times, but I regret never going to a premier division match. If you like soccer, it's a really cool experience.

yup, the indian food is out of this world. Best i've ever had.

pub food is great.

and though you don't want to spend a lot of time in london, i have to say that the national gallery always gets me all hot and bothered, but then again i'm an art geek so...

best part about it is that it's free...

Hahaha man that was great!

I didn't get to spend much time in England, but Oxford was pretty nice, not a ton to do there but a nice place to spend a day or two and see the different colleges. My sister was studying there for a summer and really liked Bath as well.

Lee,

If you are going to Dover I highly recommend you make the trip to Rye. I have heard many several times that it is the prettiest town in England. I was there in April of this year and I can defiantly say that it is beautiful. Its not very far from Dover and you will get a nice view of the country side.
