Default AEM EMS CDI1 vs CDI2

I have been planning on running CDI on my current set-up. I already have the CDI1 but lately I've been hearing of problems with the unit and that I should really look into the cdi2 unit instead.

I've seen on the EMS boards several members running the cdi1 unit with no problems but I've heard from several reputable guys that I need to ditch the unit.

Any info on the new cdi2's and what exactly has been fixed so they no longer fry out?

I've been searching the AEM EMS forum and found a good bit of info... I just thought I would ask some of you guys as well. I'll be calling AEM in the morning so if I find any further info out I'll make sure to post it up.

Straight from AEM boards

As my other posts have seen no response or help. AEM warranty says the current CDI is no longer being sold. "Haven't you heard", There are certain serial numbers being recalled. Mine is at AEM as of Friday July 8 2005. Options are to wait indefinietlyl for the new version of the CDI or if my CDI does check out defective then a refund from place of purchase, given the seller is a authorized AEM dealer.

Borrowed a DIS 4 and I am not seeing any of the ignition issues AEM techies and myself have never been able to figure out over the past year. Finally the CDI takes a dump and loses spark on cyl one and in goes the loaner DIS 4.

Everythread in the Ignitions forum is discussing a faulty CDI or C2DI

I read that very post while I was installing my setup...

Long story short, I got a defective EMS and hat to take it back to AEM (living in SoCal has its advantages) , I also took my C2DI to them to make sure it wasn't part of the recalled batch.... it was.

I talked to Jason Capland (SP?) while I wat there and he told me that they have been having problems with the new design burning up. I guess they cannot take the heat. They have been discontinued and AEM is not selling them anymore.

Any how Jason gave me a loaner CDI (the first version) to get my car running and told me that the new CDI should be out in about a month or so, at which time I can bring the loaner back and get a new one.

I would say your best bet is to keep your old unit and give it a try, the newer version is very problimatic.

I'm taking mine to the dyno tonight when I get off of work. I pray the cdi holds together

On a side note, I read somewhere that a MSD DIS 4 will plug right into the CDI harness with little or no modification...
