use a little bit of grease or lube of some sort and just work it off. wow that sounds really wrong but i hope it helps
Unbolt the exhaust from the header downpipe. Spray some wd40 on the rubber hanger by the resonator and slide it off the hook. Then just let the exhaust hang while you remove the linkage.

Do you absolutely have to unbolt the exhaust? Or can you skip this step?

When i did that exact same thing, i just wedged a screw driver into the hole of the rubber grommet and then backed it back out by wedging and prying. Its a biznatch but it will take you 3 - 5 min at MOST. funny part is that it slides right back on once your done.

ubolting the exhaust would make installing the short shifter a lot easier because there wont be anything in your way. once the exhaust is removed, you will be able to swing the shiftlinkage down (it should swing freely) to the ground and work from there. gluck
