Will this tool help me to remove the ball joint? Do most people use this or do they just hammer the ball joint out?

That's a pickle fork and you don't need one. It will seperate the ball joint and also pretty much ruin it. If you do need one for as rarely as you would need it you can get a cheapie for under 20 bucks. 99.9% of the time I take a short handled 3 pound sledge, smack the hell out of the lower arm where the ball joint connects (leave the bolt on loosely so if you miss you won't ruin the ball joint threads) and it lets go in a pop or two.
