Huh? No you can't do a head swap without taking off the timing belt, at least off of the head. It's pretty straigt forward, take off head, put on new one.

...you dont need to take it all the way off, but its probably necessary to loosen the tensioner to get some slack...

You have to pull the timing belt off the cam gear at least, it is impossible to do it any other way.

no need to loosen tensioner. Just set motor at TDC and slip off the timing belt. Use a Bungee cord to maintain tension on lower gear/water pump. Swap heads, slip timing belt back on. Rotate engine BY HAND to check cam timing.

just be careful w/ the tensioner, those bolts are a bitch! and they strip easily too....whatever you do, dont bang on the pulley w/ a block of wood and a hammer to loosen it yes, I did that once, and yes I hit it once too many times, and yes the pulley and a chunk of the block fell on the floor. haha. that's how I got my zc in my first hatch hehe.

SOHC and stamped cam gear = EASY to slip belt off.
DOHC = I wouldn't even try
