Can anyone guesstimate how much I'll be paying for a new axle + installation?

 

axle is about 60-75 with core exchange and probably another 50-100 for labor depending on where you go. there is a place locally that does good fast work and did an axle for me for like 125 out the door

For about the same amount of money you can do it yourself and keep the tools for next time and other stuff. You dont even need to buy the manual it's so easy, but a $15 manual from the local autoparts store would keep you in business with your future adventures..... I just did mine a couple day ago and the only trick was not damaging the boot on the lower control arm send a pm to pdiggitydog and he knows how give you a link to clear up that mystery...... I totally understand but I think the axel bolt on my car is going to be a bitch to take off and I don't have many friends who can come over and help me. Also, I'd rather have a working car than a non-working one. My boot is torn pretty badly and I've been driving on it for quite some time. I don't want to get into an accident. If I was well off and lived at home and had a nice house with options for an air compressor, I'd do it myself but until a couple more years, I'll have to suck it up and pay someone to do it for me.

 

Just look for a good ol' mechanic in your area that works mostly on imports.They do labor for cheap.Especially when you visit them alot and send buissness there way.

 

Buy the axle... do it yourself. It can be done pretty easily with basic tools. I've done some on my friends cars and I JUST turned 17.

Over at majestichonda.com they want like $270 for an axel. Where can I get a cheaper one?

 

Prices based on getting tools at Advance Auto Parts and Sears
axle: $70 with core trade-in
32 mm socket: $8
1/2" breaker bar: $10
chisel or punch to stake/unstake axle nut: $5
hammer: $5
17mm wrench, 14mm socket+ratchet, 17mm ratchet: $25

You can do it for $125 or less by yourself, depending on which tools you already have. It will take you about an hour and a half to do, since it's your first time.

Or you can take it to a shop and have them charge you $125 - $150, be unsure of the quality of workmanship, have no experience under your belt, and have no tools to do your left axle, when it goes.

 

Local auto parts stores/suppliers (where an independent shop and alot of dealerships source them) will get you a remanufactered axle for 60-100 bucks after you give the core back. At a shop you will never pay the core charge. the nice part about Honda's new reman program for axles is that they are covered for life despite being a little more expensive, aftermarkets are sometimes but now it's good to have this option for OEM. You can get them at Autozone or the like but my experience is that they aren't very good and if you can't do the work yourself then the amount you will pay replacing the crappy axles over and over ofsets the savings. I haven't checked but Majestics price is probably with a core charge.

 

Ok you guys have convinced me I don't need air tools to do this. I'm going to do this myself. I have a few ratchet sets and sockets. I just need to buy the breaker bar and a few other items. I'll attemp this sometime soon though.

 

Get one from NAPA and DIY... should be less than $60... and the axle will be guaranteed for life.
