Mechanical Oil temp gauge in oil pan? Anyone done this?
I need to install a Autometer Mechanical Oil temperature gauge into the oil pan, but I'm worried about drilling into the pan to put the gauge in because it has a pretty long temp probe on it and I don't want it hit by any counterweights or anything, that and it's ona new engine and I don't feel like pulling the pan off. If anyone has put in a mechanical oil temp guage on a LS/VTEC or CR/VTEC post a pic of where you put the temp probe in the pan. That would be greatly appreciated this is going into my CR/VTEC into my 1993 Si as soon as I get a few more things.
So help would be appreciated.

I have mine installed into the GE adapter plate. You could just as easily substitute a GReddy or similar oil filter adapter plate to install the oil pressure and oil temp sending units.

If you absolutely insist on installing it in the pan, make sure it's placed low enough on the pan to always be touching the oil. Also, by placing it low, it won't come anywhere close to the windage tray. I recommend drilling and welding a 1/8" NPT bung onto the pan. I think it's Autometer part number 2260 for the steel weld-in bung.

I was thinking drop the pan, drill the hole clean it out, put an O-ring on the actual fitting thats on the temp probe, then putting that in the hole of adequate size, throwing a backing nut on it and putting a decent sized coating of RTV around the outside of the fitting outside the pan...?

If you install it in the pan, it's not going to read the correct oil pressure coming from the pump.. the pan is just a storage place for the oil, its not pressurized like the rest of the oil system. you should tap into the stock oil pressure sending unit, or use a filter adapter plate for your gauge hookup.. i don't know what the pressure would be in the pan, but i bet its not ever over 10psi..
get a adaptor fitting and put it instead of the oil drain plug. I did that with my car as temporary that way I don't have to take off the pan, untill I have some other stuff to do under there.
next time I have the pan off, ill drill a hole and put the sensor there.

so, the sender hangs off where the oil drain bolt goes? I know the sender isn't that big, but that would suck if something hit it and busted it off.
