Neither, get it ceramic coated professionally. The ceramic coating will lower heat emissions from the header and actually hold up over time to the heat. You can get ceramic coat in various colors such as grey, flat black, even a polished look.

It'll actually serve a purpose on top of looking good.

The paint will just start to bubble once the header gets hot.

The professional coating is around $200; I had my header and downpipe done by HP Coatings. They cleaned up the header perfectly before coating; has held up great.

But, I understand the $$ issue; VHT will work fine, though I'd watch for rust to rear its ugly head again next spring. Coating would make sure that this wouldn't happen.

Just pick the correct paint and paint it, dont think you need primer, most will bubble with heat over time so choose carefully.

If you're worried about rust then I would be carefully scraping that too, would peel any coating of it over time.

I bought some paint at a store that sells wood stoves and fireplaces. I used it to paint my turbo manifold and its held up for 2 1/2 years. You will have to make sure you get ALL the old paint off before you repaint it. I sandblasted my manifold and then painted it. Still looks good

I can get coating done locally for around $100 for a header/exhaust mani in either flat black (2300F resistant), or a polished like finish (1800F resistant).

One option is POR-20. It's a heat resistant paint that POR15 makes. Goes on easy on sandblasted metal, looks nice. Bakes on when the metal heats up.

I painted my DC header with high temp ceramic paint and it burned off the header as soon as I started the car. Not worth it IMO.
