Maybe different kind of damage on the internals?

Horsepower not boost is what hurts engines.

ON a properly tuned engine that can be the case. But I would not want a small turbo pushing incredible amount of boost and creating lots of heat and doing no good at all. Especially under long hard load conditions.

Always match the turbo to the motor.

So my vote goes to small turbo high psi.

its more the detonation that'll hurt the engine. the thing is to get high boost out of a little turbo into a large engine means you'll have to work that sucker pretty hard, if you can get a high flowing intake and head work the larger turbo would be the way to go
