Default oil in spark plugs #3 & #4, missing, backfiring

all these just started this morining. i took the plugs out and they look good just soked in oil. end of wires are "mushy" almost a silacone. 1/2 of plug shaft was filled w/ oil. Brand new cap rotor and these were new wires.

while driving i get a ocasional miss and car shakes like taking your foot on and off gas ver fast. going up the hill i live at the top at 2K it will miss and backfire maybe 4-5 in 1K feet.

this is my DD and need it in 2-3 weeks when i do the MPFI swap(still waiting on parts)

EDIT: the valve cover seals are new too bout 2 months old. should i just do a mini me swap and while i'm at it replace the bottom seals?

just try replacing your spark plugs for now with some new ones. see if that helps. then if theres no missing or backfiring then it was only the plugs. when you replaced the valve cover gasket did you replace the spark plug o-rings? that can also cause oil to be in the plug shafts..

do a compression test... see if you have faulty piston rings... how many miles does your engine have?

i replaced the sparkplug seals but not the valve cover one. and my compresion is good. i dont have a gauge with me but i borrowed my friends ant the lowest reading was 180 on #2.

the motor has 125.7K so it's more or less young.

the only way that ur gonna get oil in the spark plug hole is from a leaking spark plug seal...i cant see any other way ur gonne get it in there unless ur valve cover is cracked ...as far as the sputtering...have u checked ur base timing....sounds like it is off to me...

Agree as well, also more than likely your studdering is from all the oil in your plug holes....oilsoaked plugs wont fire correctly...put some hondabond in your plug seals, new spark plugs, and then see how it runs.

Motor seems awful young to have that prob... That happened to me at 322,000... worn piston rings were the culprit. Any nasty power loss?

how much power loss can happen on a 92 HP motor i have noticed that it dosent feel as "peppy" as normal.

i cleaned out the plugs, plug holes, replaced seals( uper and lower) and i'm still missing and backfiring but no more oil. oh also new plug wires.

base timing ( with plug shorted) is 17-18 degres.

is my ignitor going out? i know those are common failures in these cars.

Just curious, did you ever find out what was wrong with it, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. Mine sputters once in a while and its mostly when I take of slow and at about 1.5k -2.5k rpms. Now I'm not sure if its a coincidance or its just me but It seems like it started after I changed my valve cover gasket and grommets cause there was oil filling the plug hole on #3. At that same time I decided to spray a little carb cleaner in the hole while the plug was out and allow the oil to go in the cylinder and burn off. With that said and done I put in some new NGK Irridium plugs, and I know(I think) those wouldnt be the ones causing the problem. Would they???

One more thing I just found out right now, my friend borrowed my distributor for a week cause his went out and while in his car(with his battery hold downs missing) the battery was rubbing on one of the plug wire boots and went all the way so that you can see the metal conductor exposed. Now its only one and I THINK in order for spark arching there would have to be two or more exposed. HOPE I MADE THIS CLEAR. Its a D16a6 and NO engine light or cels. TIA

if its exposed, can you see it arching with anything while running?? it could be arching with something else, causing you to miss out

How close would it have to be?? I have a relocated battery and the only thing close is the intake which is stock(rubber) and the a/c lines and they are foam covered??

I'm thinking of turning it on at night and leaving all the lights off and try to spot any jumping of current/spark around the plug wires or dizzy. I'll tell you what happens.

lots oil in the spark plug holes is generally from the 'rocker arm' seals going bad.

the spark plug hole is actually made up of the hole in the head, and the hole in the valvetrain. the seal btwn these two holes making up the one combined hole is what is leaking.

you mean the hole down the valve cover and into the head where the spark plug goes.
